You have been in Culebra - and liked it!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

On another thread someone mentioned a place in Thailand that had a similar feeling to Culebra.

I would love to hear from experienced travellers of places around the world that have (granted, very subjective) qualities similar to Culebra.

Someone really liked

Which places did you like?

Enjoy Culebra!

Now Michael, you don't really expect us to tell everyone our secret, favourite, inexpensive, untouristy location do you?

If you can make it viable for the locals to have a business (= bring likeminded people there as in this forum) you prevent BIG developers seeing an opportunity and the locals selling their land as their only way for income ...

So to answer your question Abe, yes I do!

Enjoy Culebra!

All right, I'll throw a few out there, although I haven't been to Culebra yet...

Personally, I had never even heard of Culebra- sorry- until I saw a post on one of my favorite forums for the Abacos and a writer had likened some of the more remote and friendly islands in the Abacos and Exumas to Culebra and said how very much he liked Culebra. I started investigating! Unfortunatley, the Abacos and Exumas I fell in love with 20 years ago have been "discovered" and I lament it for it is not the same but still very much worth a visit if you hurry!

I think people underestimate places like skank motels with good pools in California's Mojave desert

'course would rather be on Culebra...

Richard, can you give some names of those motels so I can pass along the info to anyone who complains about anything to me? It's good to have alternatives.

I understand your sentiment. great beaches and a little inconvenience vs. squalor and fast food. hmm.

it was a while back and I was looking for a cheap escape from NO Cal fog. and really in that scenario, whatever was there would do.

Back on Topic: waiting for a report of a place on the Sea of Cortez (from the friend who turned me on to Culebra in the first place)

Oh yeah, another place that was rather chill when I was there was Isla Mujeres, but that was several years ago. It may be more developed by now.

One place which I consider a serious contender with Culebra is Bequia. The upside at Bequia is that fresh fruit and vegetables are easily available at reasonable prices. The beach is easier to get to than Flamenco but not as attractive. The downside is that, as far as we can tell, there isn't any snorkelling and it's a bit more expensive to get here (but almost as difficult at Culebra).

Went to Isla in April for the first time- it was more crowded than I had been led to believe but it was Easter week- a mistake I realized later. It was a nice time- inexpensive beachfront accommodations, good and very reasonable to cheap food and drinks, pretty beaches but too small, too crowded (mostly Mexicans on vacation rather than tourists from US) and very limited snorkeling on overused and damaged reefs. I am not sure I would return.

Not a stellar beach, but as long as we're discussing places under the radar...

and I think that could be a website all its own,

in Italy there's a little town called Sestri Levante, it's an old Teutonic outpost at the bottom end of the Italian Riviera, right before you hit Cinque Terre.

Quiet little backwater, hard to get to, and the beach is ok in a kind of glunky and skorkish way.

but sooo laid back.

our train was delayed and we got in late and the owners greeted us with genuine concern (at first I thought they were being sarcastic or perfunctory)

but they really were worried. (it was my first time in Italy)

"I must tell you, you've missed Dinner!"

I don't care just show me the mini-bar and where to get a slice of pizza or something.

done.

Hotel Vis a Vis, top of a hill, pool, half-board, stunning view up to Sta. Marguerita (sp)? and Rapallo.

apparently Hans Christian Anderson spent time in that town - don't know why...

it's a nice 2-3 day intro to Italy before hitting the rest of the country.

I visited the islands of Solentiname in Nicaragua, even the name is romantic and exotic. Father Ernesto Cardenal an activist against the dictatorship of Somosa as part of his revolutionary pacifist act he organized the population and they started a self sustained project of naive art that has become internationally known. you can google it. The only hotel is a rustic house with different cottages clean rooms and the breeze coming from the lake. The Solentiname islands surrounds the Lake Nicaragua. For couple of bucks young guys take you to explore the other islands that are super interesting including caves. Also the art of the population there is what you see in front of you every day is a homage to nature. It is a show to see a sunset with the white cranes flying to the trees, just like one of the many paints in Solentiname. The people are very honest and good natured. The food wonderful, simple and tasty and the catch of the day sweet water fishes.

Another islands are the atolls and the islands of Micronesia, I lived in Ponape and their atolls like Kapingamarangui, Ngatik, Nukuoro, Pingelap, they are like scenes of a sOUTH Pacific Islands and not commercial at all.

Puerto Rico beautiful island, home of the hospitality and the shinning sun
