Kayaking
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello, I would like to plan a trip to Culebra during April and kayak. I am hoping someone can answer some questions for me.
1. Is there a place to rent kayaks?
2. Where can one obtain navigation charts of the seas?
3 What is the distance to circumnavigate Culebra and what level skills are necessary?
4. What is the distance to the out islands and which would any one recommend?
5. Is April a good time of year to visit and will the campground be crowded?
6. Is camping allowed on any of the out islands?
7. How far is it from Culebra to Vieques, is it kayakable?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

I believe there are places to rent kayaks.
About navigation chart... Fajardo, at any marine stores.
To circum navigate Culebra, you must be an experienced KAYAKER, with good seas, I see no problem, but good seas are rare. There are strong currents all around the island.
Luis Pena to the west of Culebra, you cannot camp there, to the northeast, Cayo Norte, which is a private island, and Culebrita to the east, and you cannot camp there.
The trip from Culebra to Vieques, in my opinion, is not possible, unless you are some kind of Jhonny Weissmuler, and have good seas.
Good luck, take care, and enjoy.

Oh! if your trip dates include Holy Friday, it will be crowded, very crowded, and not a very good kind of crowds.

Boy, whatever you do, try to plan your trip around Holy Week on Culebra. It's crowded with a capital C the week before Easter!

Enjoy though!

Thanks for the info regarding circumnaviagting Culebra. I was hoping to do a multi day trip and camp along the way. Guess that isn't an option. Any suggestions for "must sees" with 10 - 12 mile kayaking days?
Thanks for the info.

Maybe you can camp at LA PELA, there are some spots, where you can set a small tent.
However, if the tide gets very high you may be flooded.
This place is a must see, another place you should not miss is Playa Tamarindo.

Enjoy,

Catherine,
My son and I went around the island just short of 7 hours a couple years ago. We had a Folboat tandem and had a great time. I think April should be a good time to go considering winds. Jim Peterson is the guy to talk to for renting kayaks and trips. You can get charts at most gift shops and dive shops. Have fun. Culebra is a great island for kayaking.
