Sailing to Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am looking at sailing to Culebra from the BVI. We start out from trellis bay near the airport. My question is about anchorages and harbors. Are there bouys available to tie up to? If not are there good anchorages?

Hello... There is anchorage in Culebrita, the very first island you'll see when coming from BVI. The entrance is good, but shallow.
However, many big sail boats anchor there, and there are some mooring bouys.
After you pass Culebrita, if you turn to port, you will see to your left a beach on the west part of Culebrita, no moorings, but deep enough for you.
Minutes from that beach to starboard, is La Pela, very good place to anchor with no moorings. The entrance is not good, you have to look for the red/green sticks, very hard to see, which mark the entrance. After entering keep dead ahead, or turn to port with another red/green sticks.
If you do not turn to La Pela, and keep going, you'll see the entrance bouys to Ensenada, while you pass the last red/green boys, you will se to port, Dahkity, that's a good anchorage too. Keep going avoiding the reef, and turn to port ( make a U turn ) and enter to Dahkity or to Fulladosa.
Or keep straight and anchor at Ensenada.
There are others at the west part of the island, they are less visited.
My directions are based following a path to the west/northwest, heading to the north of Culebra, not to the west, from St. Thomas.
Hope this helps. I can do the TRUE excerisce reading for you to complete if you wish.

Capt. Guzman,

I have friends in Tortola who would love that information, if you wouldn't mind. I am sending them what you wrote today, as well.

William,

Are you living in the BVI?

Thank you,
Doug

I do not mind at all, I'm willing to help in any way I can.
Besides it reminds me when I used to visit the island.
If you need or wish some bearings I'll be glad to write them to you, or your friends.
I have visiting Culebra since 1984, and have seen good and bad things happen.
Even people who are supposed to know the area , lost their boats in the reefs, and others who had someone tow their boats at night.
Helping others in this matter, helps me stay in contact with something I love so much.

Keep breaking waves for good.

Forgot to tell you ... I live in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.
Have visited on several occasions JUST VAN DYKE, CANE GARDEN BAY, ROAD TOWN, BITTER END, and THE BATHS.

Jose

Thanks again for all your data. As I mentioned in my Email, we are restaurant hounds. Does anyone have recommendations of places near anchorages?

The entrance markers at Puerto del Manglar (Pela) are down right now.

Theresa said the markers to la Pela are down....
If you look good, there are reefs boths sides, they can be seen even at high tide. Tough, at night is dangerous.
Look for dark waters, and go slow... not a scientific call, but take it easy, and enjoy.

hope i be there soon.

All of the restaurants in Dewey are accessible from anchorages in Ensenada Honda. The Dinghy Dock and Mamacita's are on either side of the drawbridge, and both have tieups for dinghies. Most of the rest can be reached from the public dock, with a short stroll. It's been quite a while, but I'm pretty sure Club Seabourne has a dinghy tie-up, as well, in Fulladosa Bay.

Bon apptite!
