Hello Tracy,

Here in the Island we are surround by beautiful beaches. The most populars for snorkling are: Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo, Zony, Punta Soldado, and also Culebrita.

Culebrita is amazing you should definitely go there.

We visited carlos rosario last sunday. If you want to go there, you have to go around the chainlink fence right by the bushes on the left. The road is in pretty bad shape due to all the rainfall. When we got there, visibility wasn't the best but that was probably due to all the sediment accumulated by the rain. We saw a caribbean deer on our way to Carlos Rosario, which I thought it was most remarkable. The next day we went to playa melones. Visibility was superb, and the reef there is quite beautiful and extensive. If I had to make a choice, I would rather go to melones over Carlos Rosario based on ease of access and current conditions. Best of luck to you!

I snorkled at Carlos Rosario, and it is easy to get there from Playa Flamenco. It is about a 20 minute hike from Playa Flamenco on a dirt path/road. I thought the snorkeling was great when I was there in March. The reef begins very close to the shore, and we practically had the entire beach to ourselves. Have fun!!

Our favorites: Soldier Point when the wind is right, Culebrita and Luis Pena. Not as impressed with Carlos Rosario. We liked Melones, too.

Karolyn,

I wonder if you swam far enough out at Carlos. Once you get through the "cut", where the milk bottle buoy is, the best of the reef is still about 25 yards out and continues for a long way. The depth varies from 10 to 40 feet there, but the coral is as good and healthy as anything I've seen, including the Caymans. Also the variety and abundance of fish and other critters is terrific. I've seen green turtles, octopi, nurse sharks, and outstanding bioluminescent jellys out there, in addition to the more common species. Give it one more try.

Doug

Tamarindo is a wonderful place to snorkel. Being a first time rookie snorkeler, I was really inpressed. The water is very calm in the channel there. It is an excellent place if you may be a beginner or even a pro. It is like being in a big aquarium.

I know very good spots, but you need a boat...
In case you get the boat, I may skipper it for you.
There is Culebrita, La Pela, Cayo Norte, and some others.
Do you SCUBA dive ?

There are some boat rentals in Culebra, and others in St. Thomas, which is close to one hour in a average fast boat ( with good seas of course).

My wife and I just got back from Culebra, and Melones was our favorite snorkeling spot. We saw hawksbill turtles and an octopus in addition to the usual complememnt of technicolor fish. We also liked Punta Soldado and Luis Pena. We weren't as impressed with Carlos Rosario, but we didn't go out far enough to snorkel the best part of the reef. Melones is easy to get to and very user-friendly (great, shallow reef close to shore, not much current).

My wife and I snorkeld Carlos Rosario his past July and we had a blast. The coral and the various species of fish were unbelievable. We also encountered a 4 foot Barracua right underneath our boat.

You do need a boat to get to some of the better snorkeling sites around Culebra. If you are 25 or older, have experience with small motorboats, and can read a nautical chart, you can rent a motorboat from my company, Culebra Boat Rental.

You can then enjoy snorkeling on the reefs around Culebra (Culebrita, Cayo Norte, Luis Pena, and La Pelá). You will also have quick and easy access to the reefs around the Culebra "mainland" (Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo, Punta Melones, and Punta Soldado).

Our motorboats are well equipped; with life jackets, a bimini for protection from sun and rain, a board-mounted chart of Culebra and the surrounding islets, a swim platform and ladder, a cooler, a cellular phone, and operating instructions for the motor.

Especially for snorkelers, the board-mounted chart shows moorings and anchorages at coral reefs and it has photos of the seaward approaches to the reefs.

Snorkeling gear is available to rent or buy from the dive shop located next to us. We are on the north side of the town of Dewey, across from the school.

See www.culebraboatrental.com for more information, and you can call me toll free at 866 210-0709 (787 742-3559 locally) or email me at cboatrent@aol.com.
