Sailboats
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Anyone have an idea how I could buy a small sailboat, maybe 15 feet, suitable for Culebra waters? Either in Culebra or PR.

On a related topic, I plan to lure my friends who are starting a charter business over in Tortola, over to Culebra next spring. Can anyone tell me the distance/time to make that passage? Also is there a good source of local knowledge regarding navigating the waters around Culebra and in Ensenada Honda? I'd hate to have them crack up their beautiful new boat! I'm guessing Jack and Pat might know...has anything been published to the internet?

Many thanks for your help!

Doug

AM - mainland PR is the better place. You will have to wait for calm weather to tack upwind to Culebra or get a tow, but well worth the savings and availability.

Doug - I hate to be short, but how about a chart?

The charts available for Culebra are excellent! I agree with Michael

I'll definitely be getting a chart; in fact I already have one on a t-shirt I bought a few years back ;-). I guess I'm a bit squeamish because of something that happened to us with some friends on their motor yacht in Captiva Sound off southwest Florida. The channel through the flats is clearly marked with telephone pole type piers with nautical markings, but the shifting sand bottom had moved the actual channel outside the piers and they ran aground. We managed to power it out of trouble, but it was tense, and I still don't know what the hull looked like when they dry-docked it. Now, they never take the boat there without calling the harbormaster to get the latest "local knowledge".

I'm not enough of a sailor to know if this is common practice everywhere or just in certain tricky waters. Thanks for the advice!

Michael- I can't find anyone in PR very interested in sailboats. They're all powerboat people. There is a nice guy who deals in Hunters but he has lost interest in the smaller boats. I can't find any magazine or other source dealing with sailboats. I wouldn't mind a used boat in good condition but where to look? Any thoughts?

I would rent a car in Fajardo, drive through the various marinas/boatyards and find something! - especially because of PR's infatuation with POWER :) We sailors just love the free power that's out there :)

If your 'new' boat is trailerable you might even be able to get it to Culebra on the ferry - don't buy a hunter ... I saw one open in Bermuda after Fabian; not a pretty sight. most people use thicker layers on their sandwich, and once in Culebra it is not that easy to haul a boat, which means you want it to be a little on the rough side :)

Thomas from adventure sailing (under boating) might be good source of info!

Michael- The Vieques boat was sort of interesting. Thanks. I'd guess I could send it on the ferry to Fajardo and then over to Culebra. How do i get hold of adventure sailing? Thanks again. AM

The vieques boat you could sail over! Usually it's a broad reach. From Fajardo to Culebra I'd take the ferry though :)

just wait until hurricane season's over. in years past (like 1989, when Hugo came through) there were plenty of sailboats to be had for a song and a dance.

try the marinas around fajardo too - you'll usually find good deals there, and you can most likely trailer a 15ft boat over on the ferry - unless you want to go for the uphill sail over, of course.

Sailing time from tortolla depends of course on the boat. It's pretty much a downhill run - around 40 miles or so, depending on their course. it's an easy day sail

Jack and Pat are wonderful people and can give you some practical advice, but keep in mind that Muff and Tanama are shallow-draft boats, so they easily evade most reefs. if you're on island, ask Pan for a little advice. his boat draws 6 or 7 feet and he goes pretty much everywhere under sail.

the enterance to ensenada honda is tricky, as it snakes a bit. it's well-marked though, so as long as they stay w/in the channel markers they'll be ok. I'd advise doing it under power. the reefs on the east side of the island, as well as the ones surrounding culebrita are tricky. get the most up-to-date charts and you should be ok.

Kingpin,

Thank you very much. This was the guidance I was seeking. I knew the entrace to the harbor was a bit tricky; the first time I went to Culebrita with Jack, there was a sailboat on the reef, a disturbing sight.

I'm not sure I've met Pan. How does one get in touch with him? Also, do you know how often charts are revised? As you can tell, I'm a wannabe, not a true sailor.

Thanks,
Doug
