I would like to explore as many of the beaches on the North Shore as possible.
Has anyone been to Playa Brava or the beach near Laguna Zoni? These place names are visible on Google maps...
I am particularly interested to know what roads and/or trails were used to access these beaches and any experience anyone has had with swimming and snorkeling.
Is the coral in decent shape? Is there a colourfull variety of tropical fish to see?
If anyone has gone off road to get to these places, what GPS co-ordinates did they use to get there?
Some one has already commented on Playa Resaca, noting they had to hike over rocks to get there, but didn't indicate from what point on what road/trail they hiked in at.

If there are yet other beaches/reefs worth Snorkeling at - within swimming distance from shore, I would appreciate knowing of them.


Thanks for anyone's help.

P.S. What are the rules down there regarding walking along the beaches/seashore? Can landowners charge people for trespassing, if they are walking along the shore?

Generally speaking, the north facing beaches aren't snorkeling spots. Zoni has some down to the right and out a bit, we've seen octopus and rays there. At Brava and Resaca they recommend not swimming at all because it's quite rough and the tides are strong, though people do surf those beaches.

Best coral snorkeling is Carlos Rosario, best swimming with turtles and rays is Tamarindo.

To get to Brava, turn inland at the museum on 250 and continue until it ends. Park on the right and walk straight into the forest, this is the trailhead. It's about a 15-20 minute easy hike from there, trail is fairly well marked.

If you search this forum including posts that go back over the last year or two you will find several posts that describe what you will see and how to get to various snorkeling spots. In addition to those above, Melones and Punta Soldado also offer snorkeling opportunities right from shore.

Most of the beaches are public, but there are no facilities at any beaches except Flamenco. To get to Resaca, follow Calle Resaca up the hill to the end, and the trailhead is marked (or at least it was). The trail is easy to follow.

We are divers but enjoy the snorkeling at Melones back to the right after you get in at the picnic table. Snorkel in front of the 2 story house up on the "bluff". It is amazing. We also loved snorkeling Soldado, but getting back to it can be rather tricky due to the condition of the roads. Tamarindo is wonder for snorkeling with turtles and underwater macro photography. Look closely and you will see all sorts of small ocean critters there. Enjoy!!!

Brava and Resaca get the huge swells from the North. It's not swimming beach but it's nice to see and explore. No lifeguards or anyone else will be around if anything goes wrong. Worth visiting Brava.
