lodging
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Making plans to visit Culebra in July with my sons has me searching for a good place to stay for a minimum of five days. One minute I think I know what I want, but looking at various options leaves me indecisive again. Being a teacher, I need something reasonably priced (adhering to budget); however, I want my boys (16 & 11) to be comfortable and entertained while they leave their XBox at home :) Ideas?

Inquire under the "shelter" section of the forum..... how many people? and helps to include your budget for lodging.... B&B? guest house? condo? casa?
villa?

Well, if the boys like camping and you have camped before then Flamenco beach has a great camp ground and you can't beat the price. It's what I would call civilized camping. If it sounds like an option you can find more info on this web site and on the forum. You can find more info about lodging by reading through the posts on this forum. Your boys will love Culebra but you may have to keep them busy with hiking and snorkeling because teenagers do get board with just laying around the beach.

For the most part, any where you stay in "town" will take effort to leave and get to the beach (sometimes little effort and sometimes more).

The camping thing sounds like a winner. Take the boys down to the swimming area of Flamenco, carry some books, and chill while they frolick. Go back to your tent and relax, eat lunch, then stroll back down and read and frolick. Grab something to eat before the kiosks close and eat dinner. No effort on your part and the boys will be happy playing in the surf all day long.

Its just a personal thing on my part, but I staying (camping) at Flamenco. In doing so, I don't feel like I am visiting the beach, but rather I feel I am vacationing on the beach. Its a subtle feeling, but alot of things about Culebra is subtle.

Peace out
Herb

no Herb, word is good. in Slavonia we had game 'button, button what is button? we have no button. knotted sinew is button". or "what is "'fudge-cover pretzel'? I do not know 'fudge cover pretzel'"

to explain: as a temp thing I just did a stint in a stateside grocery store recently and am expunging what I saw as I muttered re-shelving things.

ehh forget the xBox, swimming at night (among turtles?), the stars, camping out after a day of physical activity will probably make breakfast the more challenging part than the evening's entertainment. tell stories, make them make up stories. I made myself do that last year when my eyesight was so bad I couldn't read anymore. tell them about your time at their age, ask about theirs. don't make it into a "purposeful" talk. leave that behind.

xbox and the DVR will be there when you get home and are busy.

wow I wish there was a self-edit function, that was one lousy use of quotation marks. I do like the dialect though.

basic question I should have asked. which sounds better? parked under the stars on Flamenco making snacks and chatting (or not, can't force that) or parked in a badly lit place with a DVD library staring at "The Accidental Tourist" or "Mr. Mom"?

I'd go for #2. you can snag a coupla tents at the Fajardo Walmart for less than a room and the ferry is adventure on its own.
