Flora and Fauna

I am excitedly looking forward to Camping at Playa Flamenco this month. I've been talking to many of my friends, inviting them to go with me, as I'm going solo. They asked about mosquitos and no-seeums and I confirmed that both exist on the island, but both can be easily combated with "OFF". One of my friends did a google search and found a reference from a Blog, that there were scorpions on Culebra. Then my friend asked about snakes. I confirmed that I had seen some small snakes, on the trail from Flamenco to Tamarindo (don't know what kind they were, and they quickly avoided me). However, I've never seen a scorpion. So, here is the question: Scorpions on Culebra, poisonous snakes, Spiders, etc.? I've tried to calm my friends fears by saying that I've been to Culebra many times without incident of being bitten by a creepy-crawly, (beyond some nasty ants) but what is the "scoop" on their existence?

Just want to note that last year, I did get some great pictures of deer that wandered into Area E of Playa Flamenco. Surprised me that they were there. As I understand it, deer were brought over by the military in the 70's.

Yes, there are scorpions (we saw 2 and they were very much alive) as well as a snake that was about 2 ft long. I read somewhere there are tree boas on Culebra, so maybe it is what it was. I just know I went screaming into our rental!

Vicki,
Thanks for the info. I don't have issues with snakes. However, I'm conflicted as to scorpions. Part of me wants to see one, the other part of me doesn't want to step on one with a bare foot, or share my tent with one ;0) Ha,Ha, Its all good, I just can't wait to get back on "my island". I begin planning my return trip, the day before I leave!

After visiting for about 15 years and never hearing about scorpions there I was stunned to encounter one around 4 or 5 years ago near melones. Very small but very feisty. It had been rainy so I guessed that perhaps they were being flooded out of burrows. Since that time, I had not Seen another and I visit twice a year.
