Hi,
I will be staying for 7 nights in San Juan with 1 friend. I want to spend one day at Culebra.... what is the cheapest way for me to get there? And how is the snorkeling? Thanks.

The cheapest way to get there is to take a publico from Rio Piedras to Fajardo and then take the ferry out to Culebra. If you look under transport on this site, you can get they ferry info. The snorkling is excellent and I recommend Carlos Rosario as a good place to go or Melones. Doing the publico and the ferry may be rather ambitious for a day trip. Good luck!

Listen to Michael, give it more than a day trip, you'll kick yourself later if you don't. Since money and not time is the issue, you can camp at Flamenco for $10/night.

How late do the carros publicos on Culebra run and how early do they start?

I would just cough up the money for a plane. It is less than $100 RT from San Juan and the amount of time you save is worth it.

We were recently there and flew to culebra from san juan. It was great, the view is fabulous from the plane. I had a friend who was also there and it took her 7 hours to finally get to culebra by ferry from the time she got up and traveled to the ferry, got tickets, ferry broke down, waited for the cargo ferry, etc..... we got up at 7:30a, taxi to san juan airport (5 minutes) and we were in culebra by 8:30a or so. It is sooooo worth the plane ride. candy

in my estimation it (the plane) is worth the money, but if the budget over-rides time spent, then I would try to spend a little more time on the island itself.

you could easily spend hours getting there, only to have to turn around and go back.

and what kind of fun is that?

take the ferry if you must, and camp or crash, but really, give it more than a few hours...either get there at the crack of dawn for a day trip or plan on an overnight.
best of luck

do take the plane and you can save money by flying out of the general aviation airport in San Juan versus San Juan International. I think name of the airport is Isla Verde.

The planes from Isla Grande are worth it. The publico from Rio Piedras is technically the cheapest way but not even feasible if you are planning only a day trip-- they do not run early enough in the morning for you to get to Fajardo in time for the first boat, and even if you want to make the second, you will pay plenty to take a taxi from a hotel to the terminal. Then you get in the van and have to wait for it to fill up-- get 6 passengers-- before the driver will leave. They leave you in Fajardo, where you have to get a taxi (at least 5 or 6 dollars) or another publico to the ferry dock, then you ride for an hour (if it flies) to 2 hours (slow cargo ferry) just to get there. You could rent a car from L & M Car Rental in San Juan and drive, they have an office in Fajardo where you can drop the car and they will take you to the ferry dock. But the plane, whikle expensive, is definitely the best buy for only a day trip. Check the schedule carefully though and show up on time for your return flight or you could get stranded.

I always take the público.

From Fajardo to Rio Piedras it always leaves right after the ferry since it fills up fast. In other words make sure you are in the front line to get off the ferry ...

To the terminal in Rio Piedras you can take a 50c bus from almost anywhere in the San Juan metropolitan area. If the público does not go all the way to 'Fajardo Playa', the público from Fajardo to Playa is another 75c.

Of course you could take a taxi, but that defeats the whole idea :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
