Snorkel by boat
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello folks
Need advice re: snorkeling Luis Pena and Culebrita.
I think I have 3 options, hiring a Capt. and boat for a 1/2 day trip (does anyone offer full day trips?), renting a boat from the people at Casa Ensenda, or getting a water taxi to drop us off on a beach.
If memory serves the chartered boats runs 50$ pp, the water taxi 25$, and the boat rental 160$ a day.
Any input on the difference between these options?
Any first hand experience? I am particulary curious about the water taxi option.
Also, if I rent a boat for 1 day is it feasiable to do both cays in a day? Or do I need to take two trips on seperate days. Sounds like an exaushting day if we do both.
I have done the chartered boat snorkel trip before, so I have an idea what to expect there. I have been boating my whole life on the Chesapeake, so I figure I can handle a small powerboat with no problems.
Any input on snorkeling Luis Pena and Culebrita is appreciated. And if I am spelling them wrong do correct me..Bad spellers of the world untie! Thanks!

If you snorkel Culebrita the best place is in the baths..unless of course you are snorkeling from a boat then I think there is a place on the one side of the island that is good for that.

We loved Luis Pena and it is worth the trip over there.

There are lots of good places right on the island that require no boat. Melones is within walking distance to town, Soldado, you need to drive and of course one of our favorites is Carlos Rosario just a mile walk from Flamenco.

There is no such thing as a bad vacation. Some are just better than others.

I don't believe the owners of Casa Ensenada are in the business of renting boats anymore, so strike that option. I have no first hand experience with either of your other options.

Happy Diving!

I've thought about sea kayaking to Luis Pena. I wonder if you could access some exceptional snorkel areas this way. However, getting in/out of the kayak to snorkel without going ashore is probably not an option. Maybe I'm just completely off track... happens sometimes.

Kayaking to Luis Pena is very weather/tide dependent, from everything I've read. Best to work with Jim at Barbra Rosa's on the particulars, once you're there. If it's judged not to be an option, a water taxi drop-off and pick-up is easily arranged. I've done this several times with great results: octopi, moray, small nurse shark, cleaning stations and more. Pack a lunch and a cooler, and you have an all-day adventure, sometimes all to yourself.

You might check with Tazz at Aquatic Adventures. He does some water taxi transport charters on days when he has no divers scheduled on his boat.

Thanks all. I think the water taxi sounds like the way to go for Luis Pena, or the kayak, will check Jim. These tips from experienced travellers are just what I need! Much abligied!
How about Cublerita? Anyone use the water taxi there or do I need to hire it as a 4 hour trip w/Captian?

Water taxi will work, although I've seen Cap'n Pat do snorkle trips. Check with her. The Culebrita excursions are more expensive than Luis Pena - much more gas and time required. I'm guessing the taxi will be cheaper overall than hiring the boat and Capt. It may depend on whether the demand is high that day.

It's my opinion that it's not worth the effort and cost to snorkel at the smaller islands.

I've snorkeled at Culebrita and a couple small uninhabited islands (my friend had a catamaran), and the snorkeling is FAR better at Carlos Rosario and Tamarindo, both of which are easily accessible by a short hike from the Flamenco parking lot. And both have a "remote" feel to them.

I've never really understood the urge to go to Culebrita or Luis Pena when there are better beaches and snorkeling spots on Culebra.

Snorkeling and trips to cays iinformation

We have done the snorkel charter trip with Capt Jack in past (and it was tremendous). We have also done water taxi to both cays, and kayaked to/from both cays.

Kayaking to Luis Pena is worthwhile, especially if you snorkel more than just the north beach, where the coral is very modest, but it is pleasant spot both for the beach and for beginner snorkeling. There are numerous other snorkel sites that Jim Petersen and others are familiar with, and happy to share...just requires extra paddling.

Snorkeling on Culebrita is also good on the leeward side, and better than often publicly acknowledged...shhhh, don't tell anyone. kayaking there is a real bear and not recommended unless you leave and return from Larga or maybe Zoni. The nice thing about day trip to Culebrita is that it offers a whole day's worth of activity beyond just snorkeling. Tortuga beach alone is worthwhile. Add in the Baths, some of the hiking opportunities including lighthouse and the hilltop next to the Baths, then consider the leeward beaches and the snorekling there, and Culebrita is quite an experience. If all you want is snorkeling, there are equally good or better options without the extra travel, but it still provides an excellent option.

The one option we want to try, but have not yet, is the idea of snorkeling from the kayaks, instead of from shore. That opens some neat possible locations that are hard to get to from shore due to coral or distance from shore.

As mentioned, there are no longer boat rentals available.

Willy (land based taxi) also does water taxi's to Culebrita $45/pp.

Taz, from Aquatic Adventures will do snorkel trips for $50/pp (incl. lunch) Luis Pena or Culebrita areas.

There are others as well once you get on island.

When you snorkel directly from the kayak, what do you do with the kayak? I don't imagine you can carry an anchor in a kayak. Do you tie a cord from the kayak to your waist or wrist?

We have friends who attach their kayak to a mooring ball.

I have used anchors as well as dragged them - there are advantages and drawbacks to both scenarios! If the wind is a teeny bit strong it can become a real drag ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

I loved snorkling in the baths at Culebrita. It felt like being in a natural aquarium...well, it IS a natural aquarium. Saw squid, all sorts of fish, those funky crabs...and the atmosphere of the surroundings made it unusual. Just a different experience from some of the other fantastic snorkling you can find around here.

Just a note. If anyone wants to enjoy Culebra quiet and can find good tickets, this is an awesome time to be here. There are very, VERY few people around. Yes, dining choices are limited, the roads are a mess, and election stuff is going on complete with town crier trucks, but overall, if you want peace and quiet and a beach or five with no one or maybe a couple of people at the most, this is the time. The few people that are here and that I've talked to have been thrilled with a) the weather and b) the lack of many tourists.

Save What's Left!
