Snorkeling and trips to cays iinformation
We have done the snorkel charter trip with Capt Jack in past (and it was tremendous). We have also done water taxi to both cays, and kayaked to/from both cays.
Kayaking to Luis Pena is worthwhile, especially if you snorkel more than just the north beach, where the coral is very modest, but it is pleasant spot both for the beach and for beginner snorkeling. There are numerous other snorkel sites that Jim Petersen and others are familiar with, and happy to share...just requires extra paddling.
Snorkeling on Culebrita is also good on the leeward side, and better than often publicly acknowledged...shhhh, don't tell anyone. kayaking there is a real bear and not recommended unless you leave and return from Larga or maybe Zoni. The nice thing about day trip to Culebrita is that it offers a whole day's worth of activity beyond just snorkeling. Tortuga beach alone is worthwhile. Add in the Baths, some of the hiking opportunities including lighthouse and the hilltop next to the Baths, then consider the leeward beaches and the snorekling there, and Culebrita is quite an experience. If all you want is snorkeling, there are equally good or better options without the extra travel, but it still provides an excellent option.
The one option we want to try, but have not yet, is the idea of snorkeling from the kayaks, instead of from shore. That opens some neat possible locations that are hard to get to from shore due to coral or distance from shore.
