Hello

I am arriving in Culebra with my friend on 18th of this month travelling from Ireland and very much looking forward to seeing what seems to be beautiful place inhabited by lovely people.

We are renting a jeep from Carlos' place, staying at Casa Pueblo and looking too visit a few beaches, snorkel, chill-out and eat some good basic food.

Given that we are arriving off-season, is there anything I need to know or bring with me? Can I rent good snorkelling gear there or should I bring it with me?

I am looking for a clean, basic (but nice), convenient and chilled out 5 days.

Is there anything I should consider doing or booking now?

Many thanks. (p.s What is the weather like there?)

Haaris :-)

Weather is virtually the same year round, temperature-wise. October is still hurricane season, so you never know.

Always bring your own snorkel gear, in my opinion. There are several reasons, but I'm too lazy to list them right now. All right, I'll list them. Sanitation, fit, convenience, leaking, comfort.

Thanks Jack. Good to know that. I hope I come to better weather than we have had in Ireland for the past few months!!! I'll leave the umbrella here.

I will stake my life savings (or $1,000, whichever is higher) that the weather in Culebra will be better than Ireland!

If it is raining when we get there and I hear reports of sunshine in Ireland... I will buy you a pint of Guinness if you tell me where a good one can be acquired in Culebra. Either way I am sure the few days will be fun. I will keep my eye on the weather forecast in the interim!!

Haaris,

No Guinness on Culebra; be prepared to be a bit disappointed in the beer selection.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Debbie's right. The beer selection falls far short of the U.S. and surely Ireland. But there is a surprisingly good selection of beer and liquor at Milka's grocery store. I expected to find only a handful of beer options, but there are many more than that. Not a Guiness to be found, though.

Hola! Forget about beer, drink rum: Bacardi, Ron Llave, El Barrilito is a very good sipping rum. Even the sangria is great. Try Sangria Fido. Fido, (from Mayaguez) may he rest in peace made the best sangria in all the island, the Caribbean. Now, his daughters have taken over the business. There is red sangria and rubia (white) sangria Fido. Be careful though, it is so good you'll end up drunk before you know it. Drink the local alcohol. You might also want to try pitriche, the local moonshine. Happy travels! J

Thank you all.. actually I am a non-beer drinker. yes I know its sounds funny coming from Ireland!!

We are just looking forward to being on an Island that where those on Culebra are so proud of their home.

We hope the mosquitos go on vacation while we are there.

As I look out of my window this morning we have grey skies and the rain continues to pour down!

We just got back from a trip to Culebra and absolutely loved it.

A lot of things are closed since it is off-season. Mamacita's is closed until the end of October and so is Susie's. I'm not sure about many of the other restaurants, but they were closed most of the time we were there. The Dinghy Dock was open every night though and we ended up eating most of our meals there and weren't disappointed since they have a good variety of menus. (The menu changed throughout the week.)

The mosquitoes were pretty thick, but we sprayed with OFF every time we went outside and it really did seem to keep them at bay.

A few things we learned: I don't know if it's just because it's off season or if it's an island thing :) but hours for the grocery stores weren't very long or regular, so if you need something, get it while the store is open. Don't plan on getting dinner before 6 or 6:30 p.m. - no one seems to serve dinner before that time, so you may want to pick up some snacks. Our bodies didn't figure out the time zone change for a while and we were always hungry around 4:30 in the afternoon when nothing was open.

The only place we snorkeled was at Melones Beach. It was gorgeous and having only snorkeled a few times before, we felt comfortable going out on our own there. We rented snorkel gear from the shop where the Ferry comes in (can't remember the name of it) and this time of year you don't need to reserve it. My husband's mask fit fine, but mine kept leaking slowly no matter what I did. The only drawback to bringing your own gear is if you fly in, at least on Flamenco Air, there is a 25 pound weight limit on your check-in bag.

From what I understand, the surf isn't normally that high at Flamenco Beach, but we had a great time boogie boarding there. It's also a great beach for sunbathing or just generally being a beach bum, but take the mosquito repellent because the mosquitoes will follow you clear into the water otherwise.

The weather was great while we were there, it seemed to be low to mid 80s the whole time and only rained at night.

As for drinks, we enjoyed the local rum.

Have a great time!

Thanks a million for the info, really appreciate it. Can't wait at this stage to get on the flight.

I didn't know there was a weight restriction on Air Flamenco (I don't mind paying extra). I am travelling to Puerto Rico for a conference so I am loaded up with around 50lbs of a suitcase!!

Thanks for letting us know about the closed restaurants as this helps plan in advance. I'm sure we won't go hungry!

Best Wishes

Haaris
