are traveler's checks accepted at most places? i prefer to use them instead of my card....don't want to carry alot of cash...

Hola! Yes you can use traveler's checks for purchases at places such as the mall, supermarkets, big stores. Most gas stations will not take them, you'll have a hard time finding a gas station that will. Small grocery stores as well as small retail stores will not take them either. It's not worth the hassle. It's better to have a Mastercard or Visa and take your ATM card to withdraw cash. There are usually banks everywhere and Banco Popular is on Culebra. Some places take American Express , too , no Discover card though. If you stop at a roadside stand or a food kiosk, they will want cash. We've always used our credit cards and ATM card without any trouble. Happy travels! J

thanx for your response....was thinking more along the lines of cashing checks at a banco, to where i could have cash as needed...i know the smaller businesses probably would not accept, as in belize...thinking along the lines of possible excursions, snorkeling, day trips? hotel?

Actually, here in Culebra when accepting traveler's checks at our business we've had to wait "2 weeks" for the bank to "clear them", even though they should be just the same as cash. Thus cash or VISA/MC are the preferred options.

Not many folks on Culebra accept Amex, either.

and the Post Office is the only business that accepts Discover. . .

Hola! Cashing checks at a local PR bank will be very inconvenient. They will probably not cash them because you do not have an account with them. It seems you'd be better off using your ATM card as they are always available and open. PR bank hours sometimes don't always have the same hours as here in the US and are not open after 12 PM on Saturday and closed on Sunday. My sister works in a bank on the island and she also advised you'd be better off using your ATM card and credit card. Happy travels! J

thanx for all your responses...guess i will just bring enuf cash for the week and save the traveller's checks for belize!!!!everybody here has been very helpful....do any of u live in culebra????if so, i would love to meet up with u when i am there....november 5 - 11....staying at hotel kokomo...
