Mosquitos are a periodic nuisance on Culebra. All the popular brands of repellant are sold all over the island, so no need to pack any.

Guys, there are not only mosqitoes, there are no-See-ums:

http://pelotes.jea.com/AnimalFact/Arthropod/NOSEEUM.htm

No-see-ums are tiny biting flies that often live near water. You often see many of themswarming together in a cloud. Keep your mouth shut or you might breathe some in or swallow them! (It won’t hurt you, but it will probably make you cough.) Biting midges are called no-see-ums because they’re so tiny that it is hard to see ‘um. No-see-ums are less than ¼ of an inch long.

The worst bites are from No-See-Ums, and you need a special repellent for them. And yes, there are LOTS of them, and you will be covered in bites, if you are outside after sunset. LAst year we went to Culebra, i was covered in bites, but i dont even care, it is so worth it, no bites are going to stop me, we are going again next week

Just a note: some people like all natural repellents...if you have some special brand you really like that might not be easily available, bring it with you from home.

DEET does work! I spray some in my hands and then rub it over my ankles.

Enjoy Culebra!

Well, bites on your skin rather than poison...most would agree with that!! But having some sort of repellent is a good idea in light of dengue. There ARE natural repellents that DO work. Like sun blocks, they need to be applied often. Using citronella candles helps also. As someone who for some reason mosquitos LOVE (I chalk it up to strong phermones or maybe I just have nice sweat), and living in the islands year round for a long time, I don't like having bites on my body and like to sleep at night without the annoying buzz...I do suggest trying to have something that you are comfortable with using - even AVON skin so soft works well, ask fishermen in the Everglades! It works so well that Avon brought out a mosquito repellent based on their OTHER product which became popular not because it was advertised as such, but some person figured it out and marketing took it from there.

I took the largest recommended dose of Vitamin B12 a month before we left and did not get one bite while on Vieques last year. I got this suggestion off the Vieques board and it really works. I never even had to use a spray.

We just returned from Culebra on Saturday and after camping for a week. We had very little problems with mosquitoes or other insects. We only got 5 or 6 bites between the 4 of us. I am sure that this has a lot to do with the drought and the lack of standing water on the island currently. I am sure that the mosquitoes can get fairly bad.
Culebra has everything you need so I wouldn't worry about bringing anything from the states.

Vicki, did you have any problems/side effects with having too much yeast in your system?

Enjoy Culebra!

I started taking the pills a month before we left home and followed the directions on the label as far as the dosing. I also continued to take them the entire time we were in PR (2 weeks). I never had any yeast problems while taking the B12. I know it happens a lot with antibiotics, but no problems with the B12.
