Zoraida, I think this is a great idea!

You should have this printed, collect the filled in forms and then have a drawing. Local businesses might be interested to a. put their name on the form and b. even give out a prize to the winner - let's say once every 4 months or so.

The whole thing combined with a treasure hunt ...

Great post Zoraida!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael, for Linsen's passengers I will make the printing, and we can give them little knick and knacks if they answer more than 5 correctly. because I doubt that the business people in Culebra will be willing to give a gift AND How do I contact them? no way too much complication.

ok I don't have 7, but I do think I'm right that the first governor was Spanish and I think the 2nd is a trick question, because "Culebra" means snake, I beleve it refers to the shoreline, not the the roads.

Turtles: Zoni and Resaca and sometimes Flamenco

stopped bombing? mid-90's???

ok, not so good.

well, I am going to do the game due to the fact that nobody put the rules. Richard , the first one is wrong, the First governor assigned by the crown was Stevens and he was English. He was in charge and in control of the fishing industry against the foreign pursuit. The second one is not a trick. The island was dedicated to Saing Ildefonso de la Culebra, Bishop of Toledo Michael don't tell!!!!!! now I know why you say all the answers are here. hmmmm..... yes you are right. find them people, dare to play dare to play!!!!!

Then of course the bishop was named after a serpent - or was he? I cannot find a single quote on 'San Ildefonso, arzobispo de Toledo' that refers to his full name - yes the serpent was in his shield, but who has proof about his name?

After all he was dead for over a thousand years when the town was named - did they make a mistake?

Michael, you suggest a mistake was made by the Castilian crown following the popularity of Auto de Feo?

bite your tongue.

seriously, though, I thought it was a territory claimed by the Spanish until 1898, but Zoraida, you know of an English governor then? They weren't exactly close allies, so I'm very curious...

granted it's close to the BVI, and just as close to PR, so I guess claims could have gone back and forth.

they just don't teach this stuff in high school. I feel like I know more about what happened in WW's I + II than in my own (sort of) backyard.

The guy Stevens was actually put there by the Spanish Crown via the Vieques government, which was independent from PR, at the time, I believe.

I am not suggesting they made a mistake. I am just surprised that I could not find a single mentioning (other than Culebra history pages, including my own) of the guy's name. And there is a lot out there about him!

I would like to see some proof. That's all. I was taught not to believe what they teach you in school.

Believe me, what people 'know' about WWI and II differs a whole lot from country to country ... ask the Germans, ask the Arabs, ask the Japanese, ask the Allies ..

I believe you, my comment was a criticism of what passes for curricula here. I was quite chagrined when a Filipino co-worker related much more of what happened in 1898 outside of the Caribbean.

Although I'm sure his perspective was very different than W.R. Hearst's might have been.

BTW I am also critiquing my 'history' section here on the site. It's mostly a conglomeration of dates, which have very little meaning, especially out of context.

Any takers to rewrite it?

Guys, there are not only mosqitoes, there are no-See-ums:

http://pelotes.jea.com/AnimalFact/Arthropod/NOSEEUM.htm

No-see-ums are tiny biting flies that often live near water. You often see many of themswarming together in a cloud. Keep your mouth shut or you might breathe some in or swallow them! (It won’t hurt you, but it will probably make you cough.) Biting midges are called no-see-ums because they’re so tiny that it is hard to see ‘um. No-see-ums are less than ¼ of an inch long.

The worst bites are from No-See-Ums, and you need a special repellent for them. And yes, there are LOTS of them, and you will be covered in bites, if you are outside after sunset. LAst year we went to Culebra, i was covered in bites, but i dont even care, it is so worth it, no bites are going to stop me, we are going again next week

Julia in Puerto Rico we call them MAJES and they are obnoxious as can be. I remember we were as extras at the filming of the Bomba and Plena musical of Banco Popular, in their production RAICES, and at certain hours the singers were performing for the cameras and when the cuts comes wow they were really scratching and waving the majes away. We had any single excuse to go to the make up room for a little aircondition and escape from those insects. What kind of repellent would you reccomend.?

Punta Soldado was the place a Spanish Soldier who was AWOL was found and Punta Vaca was where his cow was found. Is that right?
Isn't there a Punta Gallo where his rooster was found?

Okey Michael, see if I am right at this "research" Punta Vaca is a place where were posted some navy guys that used to hear the moo of the cows certain nights but there was no cattle at all by those times IN Culebra. Punta Soldado was another place that a navy guy was posted making vigilance and he dissappeared one night and was not found. People suspect of varios facts, one that a big wave tumbled him down and drawned another was that he was in love with a local girl and that they eloped. This was on the first period of the Navy in Culebra which was from 1902-40 the second period of the Navy was 1942-75. Dougherty was also a high range navy guy that owned some land and that the beach around his area people named Dakiti FOR mispronunciation of his name. See if I am right or wrong.
