Groceries in Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

One more question: we plan to do most of our cooking for ourselves on the island and just wondering about groceries, and where to get them, and how expensive they are? Maybe I'll find some conch? Or I wonder who to buy fresh fish from?

I was thinking I'll bring my own spices maybe, and teabags. But I'll be able to get rice, fruit, veg, oil and fish, coffee and a bottle of wine on the island, right? Is there a good bakery for fresh bread and pastry? I wonder if it's worth it for me to buy groceries at Farjardo and transport to Culebra, or if we'll be okay shopping for groceries at Culebra?

Mucho gracias!!

Fresh fish, if available is found at the Fishermen's Co-op located by the gas dock alongside the canal, past Colmado Milka, which is a good source for meat and some veggies. Does anyone know if the cobia farm is selling retail?

Bread and pastries are available at El Patio, next to the airport and at Pan Deli (I think it's called) across from the Methodist Church. Also some pastries can be had at El Eden reached by turning left up the dirt road across from Milka.

More info may be available by perusing the Food and Drink Links above.

Eek, restaurant meals $50 -$80 per person? Per person?? ouch! Thanks for the warning!! Suddenly I don't feel so hungry! Not surprising given the expense of freight, but I guess I'll bring rice and spice, maybe peanut butter and dried beans and hunt locally for something interesting to add to that? Where do Culebrans buy their groceries? I don't see any grocery store listed in the food and drink link. But there is a grocery store, right? IE: where do you buy milk and eggs and olive oil? (but I sure sound hungry, don't I, hahaha)

And can you buy a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer on Culebra, or is it only available from the restaurants etc?

Thanks Doug! I've always thought my husband and I should see Culebra, and visit the ocean there, at least once in our life! I can't wait to stick my toes in the water!!

Wine and groceries are no problem in Culebra. El Eden is a great deli with a large wine selection. There is a grocery store in Dewey on the main road before you go over the canal bridge, which takes you to El Eden
, Milka and the gas dock. The store carries all your staples and not much more expensive than stateside. We have never spent $50 for a meal on Culebra and have always had great food. Try Mammacitas. Portions are large enough you can get an appetizer, drinks and split a meal and spend less than $30. And the food is outstanding!! Our usual routine is cook breakfast at the house, go to El Eden for wine and deli meat, cheese, bread for lunch at the beach and eat out for dinner. The only thing you may find hard to get is gasoline. So if you rent a car fill-up the first day.
You are going to love Culebra!!!

Mayra - bulk basics and things you would expect at a Safeway, limited choice, but large quantity

Milka - fresh meat and veg and assorted packaged, limited quantity, but large choice

Eden - impressive cheese, sausage, frozen section and good liquor/wine selection - the liquor store by the dock (I think) is cheaper, but small stock

it's hard to imagine spending $50-80 pp on dinner except at a couple of places (although they are good and that must include copious wine) plenty of budget-wise alternatives are around. In addition to Mamacita's I would add (and you'll find) Dinghy, Barbara Rosa's, Batey, that place along the road to Flamenco across from the airport, the pastillito stands at Flamenco and others.

forget bringing basics - that's no problem, it's fresh vegetables that's an issue and bear in mind the local fishers generally flash freeze the catch anyway for transport.

just be flexible and go with what you find and you'll be ok. honestly as far as beans and rice go, there's no trouble and unless you want some really exotic spice, don't worry.

I agree with Richard, except that I had problems finding most of the spices I know and had no clue what most of the available spices were like. Since you can easily pack them, I'd bring any favorites along.

yes! corroboration! thanks Doug!

y'know, I've never been quite able to figure out the hours and days of the fish co-op...

as someone pointed out here once, most of the day's catch is first offered to the restaurants.

and that said, re: restaurants, if it sounds like a ridiculous wait, ask because they may very well be making sure there's enough food in the kitchen before you're seated. that only happened once, but not something one comes expecting.

I would also add that some grumps around here have complained about cold service, but I have a strong feeling maybe they weren't even attempting Spanglish and wonder if the server was perhaps concentrating on the translation...
