snorkeling gear
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

We (2 people) are planning on snorkeling while in Culebra mid November.

Does anyone know the rental cost of snorkeling gear for 3 days? Or is it best to buy my own gear and bring it with me?

Also, can I rent a parasol for much needed shade!

Thank you!!!

Chantal and Matthew

In the past, I have rented snorkeling equipment from Jerry while I was renting a jeep. The dive shops also rent gear (check the link on this site to the Culebra Divers web site). I believe the cost is in the $10-15/day range no matter where you rent, and three days might be long enough to get you a discount.
I can't help you with the parasol. I tend to spend most of my time in the water. A few beaches have some natural shade (some palm trees at Zoni, a lonely tree at Punta Soldado, etc.)
Have a great trip.

A lot of the condos and hotels will have gear free for the borrowing. Other then that you can rent. Don't bother dragging it all the way there.

I bought and bring my own for two reasons. I have prescription lenses in my mask, and, after all, seeing stuff is what it's all about. And even tho' I live in St. Louis, I get a ton of use from my gear by snorkling the crystal clear float streams of Missouri. Different from Carlos Rosario, but terrific.

a good mask that really fits is worthe the money and I would second Doug on this point, since I also wear prescription goggles.

Enjoy Culebra!

wW were there for five days in Feb. The first day we went to Flamenco Beach. In the parking lot area there is a couple of businesses that sell food, and various beach items like snorkels, sunwear, parasols, etc. They also rent limited stuff. Since we were staying five days, it ended up being cheaper to buy a large umbrella for $25 than rent a smaller one for $5/ day. That was the best purchase we made. We took that umbrella everywhere during our trip, including home with us, and it's served us well this past summer. Make sure to get one of the large ones, and be knowledgable on how to properly secure them into the sand, as it is pretty windy out by Playa Zoni and the outer beaches.
