Newbie needs info
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My husband and I are headed to Culebra in November and would love to get some information from those who have been there before. We are interested in Harbour View Villas and having searched on this forum - have heard some good and some bad. I love the idea of the open-air living (we've stayed at palapa-type lodgings before without windows) but am curious about how close it REALLY is to town and a beach. We will be scuba diving and will want proximity to town. And I want to be able to get into the water any ole time I please!

If someone has a suggestion for a place that offers (1) a kitchen (2) walking access to town (10-15 minutes max) (3) a beach close by and a great view - I'll take those too!

Additionally, I would love to hear some advice/thoughts/comments on the local scuba operations, sites and any other tidbits you can provide.

Thanks!

TRY CASA ENSENADA THEY ARE WALKING DISTANCE TO TOWN WHERE THE DIVE SHOP IS AND CLOSE TO MALONES BEACH GREAT SNORKELING HERE (I DON'T DIVE) THIS IS VERY NICE, AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN PLACE THAT COMES WITH LOTS OF EXTRAS AND IS RIGHT ON THE BAY (FREE USE OF 2 MAN KAYAK) BUT NO BEACH ACCESS. Beware of these people who do not sign with a name, they are most of the time trying to sell you something.
And the experiences posted are not based on actual reality, they are rather based on what they want to sell.
I have been into Casa Ensenada, it very good, still... do not make decisions on unidentified characters.

Hi Susan:
My wife and I have stayed several times at Harbor View. We enjoy the people and the location. We can walk to town in 10 minutes or less and also can walk to Melones beach in about the same time. You will have a great view of the town ferry landing and waterfront but will not be right on a beach.
Melones is one of the best snorkeling places on the island. If you get in the water early (8: to 9:AM) you will see many species and large numbers of fish.
You can easily walk to the dive shop on the waterfront and Walter will show you some incredible diving.
Enjoy your trip

Susan,
We actually loved snorkeling at Zoni. Even though it's a bit wavy, you don't have to go too far out to see beautiful huge colorful corals and lots of fish. We did Melones as well which was nice--we got in at the south side by the side of the road and snorkeled around the rocky point. Carlos Rosario was really great as well, and secluded. To get there go to Flamenco and as you're entering the parking lot, to your left in the back of the lot there will be a fence that is a little open with a sign for the path to Carlos Rosario (it's an obvious path, you can't get lost). The hike takes about 15-20 minutes. It is great over there! Maybe you'll see the infamous Island Cat...if you do, try and take pictures and go chat about it with Barbara and her husband at Barbara Rosas!

I have heard that Soldado is great snorkeling as well but haven't been there.

Susan, great place that will have a small kitchen, a/c, kitchen table, sofa, bed, bathroom, tv is: CASA ROBINSON.
I just got back from a great vacation and stayed there. I too did not have a clue as to where to sleep. I lucked out by choosing this place and can not wait to go back.
The place is very clean and a short walk down the hill to the town. You can also use the local cabs there.
You will have a blast!

My husband and I stayed at Harbour View Villas this past March. Great villa with a nice view of the harbour. Easy walking distance to town and Melones, however we did get pretty warm walking....no breeze from the water on part of the walk. Very friendly staff at Harbour View. We liked having our own villa. More private.
