I should know the answer to this because I'm a lawyer but I can't seem to find out definitively - does a US permanent resident with a green card need a passport from their home country to travel to Puerto Rico and back into mainland US? My husband is a Spanish citizen but has a US green card, and can't find his passport...I don't know if he will get a new one in time for when we leave for PR in two weeks...anyone know??

if your husband is free to travel state to state without a passport then he will not need one to enter or leave Puerto Rico. traveling from the states to Puerto Rico is the same as traveling to let's say Hawaii. hope that helps.

I know of people with resident alien status who were asked for their passport . (Which does not mean it was correct ..) Make sure you have sufficient ID other than the passport!!

Enjoy Culebra!

I know for a fact you don't need a passport. My wife was a Legal US Resident the first two times we visited. (she's now a US citizen) she's from Mexico and never needed one, in fact, All she needed was her CA License. Enjoy your trip.

Rican in Cali :-)
