camping at Flamenco

We are travelling to both Vieques and Culebra. We have short term casas booked for both Vieques and Culebra, but were going to camp a few days in Culebra to save money and because the Casa Ensenada where we are staying a couple of days is booked the rest of the time, as were most of the places we called. We are definitely going to pack light, but what do you do with your belongings when you leave your campsight? I've heard Flamenco beach is relatively safe without the worry of thievery like in Vieques, but if we go snorkeling for the day at another beach I don't want to bring my camera or things that can't go into the water with me. Anyone have suggestions? And where's the most economical place to stay in case the weather turns bad and we can't camp?

I too was worried about my camera since it was rather large and I found that when we went snorkeling I left my bookbag on the beach and every now and then we looked up to "check on it" but soon as time passed I didn't really think about it to much as everything was ok and safe. Depending on your own personal comfort level and of course the size of your camera you can get these water proof bags at a marine store. In fact it was the only place I could find them. They are aweseom you can put anything in them we got them to put our phone and our mini little camera in them so I can try to take underwater digital pictures which happened to work out pretty well considering the little bit of thought put into it and for our phone so we could keep track of time so we did not mis sour flight home. (it seemed easier than having to get out of the water every so often).

I would look into if you can keep your tent up all day I feel like I remember seeing tents up all day long. as far as staying under shelter if you can not keep your tent up. I would say go hang out and eat someplace. Mamacitas was a blast for us and we stayed for a good while. Hopefully you will not experience bad weather.

i just returned fr Culebra and was seriously considering camping, but ended up not. I DID totally check it out tho for next time. Most of the campers seemed to be from the main island complete with their rolling luggage. Sometimes the flamenco parking lot looked like a terminal.
Would I camp there? FOR SURE - looked awesome. Of course bring your diamonds, rubies and digital camera with you whem you leave the tent.

I would suggest not hanging at the campground end of the beach - if youre in the water and stuff unattended - there are tons of "escape routes" for somebody to grab and run. Thats the crowded end of the beach
Instead, walk to the opposite end of flamenco by the rocks. you'll be by yourself. We hit just about every beach on the island and I was amazed for busy July how empty they were...your stuff should be safe.
