General Information About Culebra

Hi All,

My wife, 5 year old daughter and I are going to PR in November of this year.
We are planning to visit Culebra for a day. Although I was born in PR and lived there until I was 14 I have never visited Culebra. My wife is from Mexico and I want to make sure she enjoys her visit to the insland. This is our third trip and believe or not we have not been to the beach yet! My fault of course. She's let me know :-)

After reading some posts and browsing the site, it looks like a bit of heaven! :-)

So, what I'd like to know is what to expect once I'm there. I will be renting a car and will travel to Fajardo from Ponce. How early should I get there?
What is the best beach? I'd love to do all kinds of things but with a 5 year old I'm somewhat limited. Is the island a good setting for kids? In all I'm looking for suggestions/comments. :-)

I thank you all in advanced for any information.

Regards from San Diego.

Hector, Culebra has a very slow paced/relaxed rythm.
You can not rush things, for a day there is very little you can do, and you will want to do more.
There is not much to do for kids, unless you have a boat.
The biggets beach is Fllamenco, and since it is for one day, got there and stay there. Enjoy that to the fullest.
The passenger ferry leaves very early, by 0900, and it is very important that you be there at least one hour before, or more.
I have heard that you can make reservations, but I do not believe that it will garantee you boarding the boat. When returning you have to be at the dock early to buy your return ticket.
If it is Sunday you are planning, change it... do not go on Sunday for only a day.
Leave the rush behind, enjoy your day, and take many pictures.

Hi Capt Guzman,

Thanks for your reply. Are boat rentals available at Flamenco Beach? I'd love to take my little one on a boat ride. She's been to La Parguera but this beach looks so much prettier :-) What's the cost more or less for a one day or one afternoon rental? And last question, are you a local?

Thanks again for your time.

You can say I was local for many years, since 1984. But the truth is I'm not.
I used to have my own boat and sail to Culebra not less tham twice in a month.
I live in Miami now.
There are boat rentals, and water taxis too. They are not located in Flamenco, you rather find them in Dewy ( where the ferry dock is. )
It depends on what you want to do, and what experience you have handling a boat.
It seems the cost for water taxi has incrreased to noearly 50. dollars.
The boat rental is more expensive, I can say not less than 100.00 per day, do not know about the fuel.
Capt. Luis Grundler has water taxi, and in Casa Ensenada you'll find Culebra Boat Rentals.

UPS... there is no comparison with La Parguera, Culebra is a wonder beauty, gentle friendly people, good food, and the best beaches.
Whenever possible... go with the locals. for food/lodging/entertainment.

Thanks again for your time. I am looking forward to visiting this wonderful island. Even for a day we should have tons of fun. I do not have any experience operating a boat so we may have to pass on the rental.

I'll defenitely support all local businesses on the island. Having being born in PR, I love coming home and enjoy what it has to offer. I Also love to teach my little one about her Puerto Rican roots - she's half Puerto Rican and Half Mexican.

Take Good Care CPT.

Just a note...for a five year old there is plenty to do! Swimming, snorkling (my five year old who is now 30 was snorkling at five and loved it!) playing at the beach - building sand castles with my Dad is one of my favorite memories.
And Flamenco has a number of food stands with local foods available at great prices, so she can get some PR (pinchos, plantains, etc) food as well.
Enjoy your visit!
