Eels (Ewww)

Hello All,

I am planning on going to Culebra for a day or two in July while vacationing in Old San Juan. I am for some reason or another grossed out by Eel's. I want to snorkel really bad but I just get really freaked out thinking about a snake like creature in water, especially their mouth with all of those teeth. My question to all of you whom have snorkeled will I be ok just doing it in shallow waters like off the beach and not going out on a boat? Or are they something you see when you are Scuba Diving? PLease say yes to that!


I am sorry it is so bizarre and more than likely I will snorkel anyway because I love nature to the fullest, I even plant special flowers so the squirrels can eat so I am just being curious about these eel fellows. I just don't want anyone to get the wrong idea about my question.

We snorkeled from the beach at Carlos Rosario and Tamarindo Grande and never saw any eels. Saw lots of great coral, lots of fish, a few rays but no eels. Don't know what you would see if you went snorkeling from a boat.

Hi Gina,

In all the snorkeling that we have done in different islands we have yet to see an eel. I don't think seeing an eel while snorkeling is all that common. They tend to hide in crevices. I wouldn't worry about it.

Eels live where coral / rocks reef are, it can be shallow or deep.
These marine life can be found anywhere, it is their home, and they move around.
I quit diving because I was affraid of seeing sharks, I suggest you do the same if you cannot take it out of your system.

I know it's their home and that's why I was just being curious because if they do hang out in shallow waters and I am not comfortbale then more than likely I would not do it. I stopped swimming in the Jersey Shore for many years now because I couldn't see my feet or anything past a 1/2 foot underwater. All of this and I grew up on boat in Florida GO FIGURE RIGHT?! I love the water and as I am getting older it is making me so overwhelmed as to how large it really is and everything that lives there it is truly another world underwater.

Gina,

Capt. Guzman is correct. Eels live in shallow water and deep water in coral ledges, rocks and holes. If you stay a foot or so off of the reef/rocks, and if you are only snorkeling above the reef/rocks, you should not encounter an eel. They are shy, reclusive creatures, and they are not coming out of their holes to check you out unless you give them a reason to (i.e., food, which would be a pretty stupid thing to do). In my 18 years of diving, I have only seen one "free swimming" eel, and that was not in Culebra. I would suggest that you snorkel on the top of the water and not do any freediving down to the reef to check things out - that would be the time when you MIGHT encounter an eel. I think your chances are pretty darn slim while snorkeling.

You know, you can go snorkeling by yourself if Culebra on your own personal excursion, but we went with Captain Pat, from Culebra Dive shop, right across from the ferry dock! And it was amazing! We never saw any ewwls. We did see some needle fish, a few schools of fish, blue fish, etc. But nothing scary like that. We paid $90.00 for two people for two hours of snorkeling. If you go around the last available tour hour, she's willing to let you snorkel a little bit longer! We went to two different locations away from the main island of culebra. And it was amazing! At Flamenco Beach you can snorkel but personally I'm not sure how good it will be! I'd advise to go on the tour! It's amazing!
