Fresh produce
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Today I finalized my trip to Culebra and I am so psyched! I am a vegetarian and plan on stocking up for my casa. Can someone suggest the best place to buy fresh veggies? Someone mentioned something on this form about a "silver truck" near the airport with fresh produce. Is there a roadside stand with freshies? Also, dining out--will there be vegetarian options on the menu?
Thanks!
Jen

Colmado Milka has some good vegetables, and thhere is also another close to Milka up a small hill.
However, vegetables are not the most important element of Culebra's food places and lifestyle.

Culebra is not very vegetarian friendly. You can find good old standby's - potatoes and onions, easily, but may have to visit several stores to find greener items. Mayra, Milka and Isla del Sol stores have the best selection, but you may need to go several different days to see if anything new has arrived. You can often find carrots, celery, iceberg lettuce and green peppers. Tomatoes are generally pink and mealy, but tolerable. Fruits are abundant - papayas, mangoes, plaintains and "florida" avacadoes in season. Rice and beans are easily found too. You can probably make it a few days or a week, but you'll be craving fresh veggies when you get home.

To answer your specific question, the fruit truck quit running several years ago, and there are no roadside stands specifically for fruits or veggies.

Happy Diving!

I heard that the fruit truck quit running too but when we were in Culebra last December we saw the truck at the corner by Carlos Jeep and the airport. Picked up some great bananas, star fruit, and papaya at a great price and never saw them again.

I agree. Being a vegetarian on the island may be a bit difficult! We looked in a few different stores, but didn't find much except for canned fruits. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the replies. I am really looking forward to my upcoming trip. When I travelled to Vieques a few years ago I took along some staples to keep me going and I plan on doing the same for this visit to Culebra. I do appreciate all of the suggestions! Debbie posted that there would be fresh fruits in "season"...can someone let me know what the season is for most of the fruits?

We are also vegetarian and were able find some fresh fruit and veggies on the island, although it was a struggle. Colmado Milka had the most veggies and we had some great salads at El Eden. We also enjoyed the refreshing fruit batidas (smoothies) at Playa Flamenco. The silver truck that we had heard about was nowhere to be found when we were there a few weeks ago. We also brought some fruit with us from home which lasted a few days. Have a great trip! -Caroline

Sorry, Jen - my grammar wasn't so great there. I was referring specifically to florida avocadoes in season, and that season is winter. I've gotten them there as late as March. You cannot find california (haas) avocadoes there.

But let me try to answer your question from a seasonal perspective. January through March, I have found apples, avacadoes, papayas, mangos, plaintains, star fruit (carambola)

In May and June, acerola (loaded with vitamin c) is in season; can't buy 'em, but if you can identify and find a tree, mmm mmmmm! Also, apples, plaintains and mangos.

I'm sure there are other fruits available; these are the ones that are most common and come to mind easily.

Happy Diving!

In my experience the produce at the Milkas left much to be desired...but my boyfriend and I could pretty much have lived on the puertorican rice and beans. They are SO GOOD! I think the restaurants usually had a veggie option (some pastas) but we kind of ignored them because we're seafood/meat lovers. Good luck!
