Camping reservations?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I've never been to PR, but my brother lives in Rincon. I have traveled the globe however and do my homework before embarking on an adventure. From what I've gathered here and elsewhere, if he and I go to Culebra around the first week of May prior to the weekend, we should have no problem getting a campsite. Is this a correct assessment amongst the regulars here?

Also, I see pros and cons concerning taking a vehicle on the ferry, but I am reticent to leave a rental vehicle procured in Aguadilla sitting around in Fajardo for a few days. I have driven in Africa. How much worse can Culebra be, really?

if you take your car rental off the main island you will not be insured.

There's no problem with driving around Culebra; I would recommend a jeep if you want to go to different beaches....the problem is getting reservations for the car in the ferry and sticking to your schedule. I would suggest getting a ride to Fajardo and on your way back rent a car in Fajardo or Isla Verde and drive to Aguadilla; you can rent a Jeep in Culebra...and definitely rental cars are not covered once you get on the ferry!!!

Since I have 16 days in PR and no "schedule" sticking to one is not an issue- we're heading out from Rincon as soon as I arrive to see the east side of PR first. I just want to know if I need to reserve a campsite in advance, or if the first week of May is a time when walk-ins are available on a week day.

From what I can see, parking a rental once we hit the the campsite and using alternate forms of transport to go to more remote areas on the island is the way to go. Multiple rentals is not a choice because it's much more inhibitive to our being able to meander around the main island, the point is to maintain autonomy.

When you all discuss insurance, are you meaning the optional/supplemental insurance? I don't generally purchase it, I opt for the Collision Damage Waiver because it's covered by my credit card. I think I am going to have to request a faxed advanced copy of the PR contract from Hertz. I work for the world's largest insurance corporation (AIG) and so I will scrutinize the contract prior to arrival and also make other inquiries with my CC company. There are a lot of things that rental companies tell consumers that the consumers are liable for which are not the truth at all, so I will address this specific to PR and report my findings here. Our corporation does business in PR, though I don't know if we are in the Auto market there yet.

Kathy, it would be great if we could clear up the insurance/ferry hear-say! Looking forward to your findings - please start separate topic with results :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Okay, but when is someone going to answer my original question about the camping reservations? Is yet another thread really necessary, I think this one is pretty much done once I get my answer- you know, I don't say this to be obnoxious, but our family is joking that our brother is turning into Kurtz from Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" from moving to the tropics. Somehow, the tendency I see for digression so far seems to validate this belief, LOL......................

Okay, thanks Michael, and also, to close out the topic, I must now give an apology and a nod to Mari- I have since discovered that the cost of a WEEKLY one way rental from Aguadilla dropping off in Cieba is not that much more than doing the rental dropping in the same pickup location, at least not for Hertz. So, the problem of a car sitting around is now taken care of- there won't be one. The one day, one way fare from Cieba back to Aguadilla of course will be a little higher, but in the end, I think that maybe conventional wisdom wins out on this one. There won't be a second thread until I get back and have time to pore over the rental contract issued by Hertz, at which time I can tell you all what legally can and cannot be enforced. One other remark- contracts change from company to company.

Thank you all for your help and patience, I know that I will enjoy my vacation very very much.
