campground

Hi,
I just have a few questions:

Can anyone recommend a nice spot at the campground? Is section E the nicest?
Also, is there a cutoff time for checking in? We may not get there until evening.

As for getting to Fajardo, I saw on the Elenas-Vieques website that a husband and wife
drive people from SJU-Fajardo for $50. Has anyone used this service?

And finally, how far in advance do you have to get to the ferry in Fajardo to buy tickets
before it leaves? We arrive at noon in SJU, and were hoping to catch the 3pm, but it may be
tight.

Thanks!
Caroline

Hi,

Section E is very nice but it is the farthest away from everything...baths, showers and concessions. Section D is nice as well when the campground is not crowded. That section has shady trees, grass, and water nearby. Try to pitch your tent in the shade, and move your picnic table into the shade.

You can call Ilca for a ride. It is 60 dollars. In English:

Get to the ferry an hour early or you can charge your ferry tickets in advance by calling the ferry. Telephone Numbers -- Culebra (787) 742-3161
Fajardo (787) 863-0705 / (787) 863-0852 / 4560 Make sure you take a Dramamine if you tend to get sea sick at all.

Weekends are busy..Try to avoid coming or going on a weekend and don't even think about camping on spring break, Easter times when the campground is packed full with big-time partiers...drinking, screaming all night.... ..

Have fun and remember to bring Off for the ants and mosquitos that were not bad at all when we were there three weeks ago.

Thanks for the info, Kathy. It's very helpful. I think we'll try for
Section D.

Another question about security. Did you feel ok leaving stuff in the tent and
at the picnic table when you were away during the day?
(Obviously we'll take valuables with us.)

And I read about problems with rats!! Did you see any or any animals that might get into our bags in search of food? Could we leave food in a canvas bag zipped up outside of the tent?

Any other tips for camping would be appreciated!.

Thanks,
Caroline

Hi,
If the campground is not crowded, you could leave your non-valuable stuff like camp stoves and lanterns....not money, electronics, video cameras etc.

Yes, we saw rats, iguanas, snakes, birds, BIG spiders, lots of ants at our campsite...bring some Tupperware containers to put food in.

Other questions? Let me know!

Have fun!
