sea urchins
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am wondering if we should get those ocean shoes b/c when my parents went to Culebra, my mom got one stuck in her foot! She was just floating in the water. I never saw these in St. John so thought I'd ask. Thanks!

You should wear some type of shoes on the rocky shore beaches, as urchins are plentiful. The best thing to do when snorkeling on the rocky side - Carlos Rosario, Melones, Punta Soldado and others - is to put your fins on in the sandy part of the water, stick your face in the water so you can see where you're going, and swim aways from the ledges as soon as possible. The urchins wedge themselves into rocks, coral heads and limestone ledges, so don't let your feet (or any part of your body for that matter) touch them. This is probably what happened to your mother - she was floating over a shallow ledge and she kicked into or dragged her foot across an urchin. It's a painful thing! On the sandy side - Flamenco, Resaca, Zoni - the reef is a bit deeper in most parts, but you still should be careful to stay a good foot or so away from it so that you don't get hurt.

Happy Diving!

Get the beach shoes. I had two slices in the bottom of my foot from the coral in the ocean, and when I got home, I got a pair of those shoes at Target for $5! They run $14.95 to $32 in Culebra!
