General Assistance Requested
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello:

I'm from the snowy state of Wisconsin and heard about Culebra in passing from a stranger.

My wife and I have two children, 11 year old daughter and 9 year old son.

We are searching for a nice, quiet vacation spot and Culebra has now caught our attention however we know very little about it.

Is April a good time to come down? Here is the question to top them all. My wife and son get very "motion sick" and hate flying as it is. Especially in small planes. Is there any way to get to Culebra from Puerto Rico instead of flying a small plane? Are there any boats and if so, are they pretty good sized boats? Finally, how long would the boat trip be between Puerto Rico and Culebra?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. I appreciate it.

Tom

Tom, welcome to Culebra's forum!

Check out the pages of the site and you will find lots of info of how to get in and out of Culebra. If motion sickness is a problem, I would opt for th eplane though .. :)

Hope to see you!

Enjoy Culebra!

I think from Fajardo Ferry is the best way to get there. However, from Fajardo airplane only takes 15min or so..........Enjoy the paradise in Culebra, excellent choice

The government ferry boats are close to 90 feet boats.
About motion... it is related to sea conditions, the average might be a little motion. If your case is extreme go for the plane, if it is not go to the stern of the boat, there you'll feel less movement.
The ferry costs some 2.50 or 3.00 each ride, it gets full quickly, and I have seen people left behind. There are at least three rides during the day, so any one you choose better get at least 90 minutes before departure time.
The ride takes one hour, and the place takes less than 15 minutes, but costs around 30.00 each ride.

We took the plane from Isla Grande airport, with Air Flamenco, and it was fine. Only about 25 min. The seas were rough for most of our stay, so we didn't try the ferry, but the people we talked to said they would take the plane next time. Part of the problem seemed to be luggage, they just stack it all and you have to wait a while to get it after. Also they were pretty sea -sick, but it may have just been a freak thing with the weather. We rented a small boat for a few days and the swells were pretty big. Flight was pretty smooth, and I wouldn't have missed the ariel view of the islands and reefs for anything!! It was one of the highlights of our trip. Fare was $95.00 per person round trip, plus 45 cents per pound for luggage over 25 lbs. They did not weigh my laptop, huge travel purse, or my husbands backpack, so we put most of the really heavy stuff in there. We packed for 2 weeks plus scuba gear, and still only had to pay for about 45lbs extra. The flight also required a taxi ride from the international airport to Isla Grande, about 20.00 per car. Flight is more expensive if you go direct from the international airport. You can take a shorter and less expensive flight from Fajardo, but then you have about a $70.00 taxi ride. If you fly I don't think you will regret it. Even being a little airsick is better than if you are seasick for a long ferry ride, and then have to wait around for luggage and transportation at the other end with kids who are tired and bored. Good luck. Wish I was going there instead of just getting home to Michigan!! Have a lot of pictures I will try to email if you are interested let me know what you would like to see. Jean

I just got back from Culebra on January 22nd. If motion sickness is an issue for you, you should not take the ferry from Fajardo which is a two hour ride. I flew from Fajardo airport to Culebra for $50.00 roundtrip on Vieques Airlink (there are other airlines that fly to Culebra and are listed on this website). Total flight time from Fajardo to Culebra was 10 minutes. From Isla Grande airport, the cost is about$90-$100 per person with a total flight time of 25 minutes.

Enjoy
