Dear Debbie, that is exactly my point, the forum encourages opinions not facts. Tourism is now, and will be the backbone of the economy of this island. It takes a lot of investing, and not just money to get a tourist establishment up and going, to have some opinionated disgruntled visitor wipe out all that sweat and tears. Professionals are the ones that should take on that job, as food critics and hospitality surveyors. They should give the stars or not. Then we have government institutions such as the Department of Tourism. They should send their qualified inspectors to do the checking and flunk or pass the establishment. I HATE burocracy, but there is a place for it also. Do not take me wrong, I do not think that the personality of Culebra should encourage big hotels like the Hyatt or Marriotts. Our first mistake has been Costa Bonita, and the owners and investors will find out in due time. For monsters like that, you need a very large labor base, and infrastructure, which we lack. But it is like the saying “ no hay mal, que por bien, no venga “ eventually Costa Bonita will be our second town. Dewey is at its limits of growth and our expansion points there. The high-strung, type A personalities, will stay out of Culebra because for one thing they are a more experienced bunch of travelers, do not worry. Culebra will retain its charm through hell and high water, even taking in account the growth factor.
If you want to be a culebrense, then move over here and become part of the community sharing with us your talents. I hope to meet you some day too, but right now and during this controversy, I prefer to remain a recluse and enjoy my privacy.
Down with Michael Fischer and Victor Gonzales!!
