The lighthouse was formerly owned by the U.S. Coast Guard who owned the lighthouse and surrounding 4 acres of land. Ownership of the property is being transferred from General Services Administration to the Municipal Government of Culebra. The Municipality is currently researching sources of funding to either stabilize or restore the lighthouse. The light itself, operated by solar powered batteries, will continue to be used as a navigational aid and will be maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
