Places to stay
Culebra, Puerto Rico

NEED HELP!!! I have never been to Culebra and would like to visit sometime next year. I have been searching websites looking for a great place to stay. I want to stay somewhere that is nice, and close/on the beach. I would also prefer a place with at least some sort of a kitchen, also at least a double bed. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

All depends on your budget, close to the beach there is nothing cheap, in Dewey, you can find something for around 90.00 with public kitchen.

The least expensive close to the beach may be Culebra Beach Villas.
You have time, keep looking.

Check out Villa Flamenco Beach, next door to Culebra Beach Villas. Right on the award winning Flamenco beach, efficiency kitchen rooms, clean, run by very nice people, not as big as next door but quieter and appears to be better kept. Check out very good about Villa Flamenco, I have heard in this forum very bad reviews about them.

I disagree with Jose on 2 issues regarding Villa Flamenco Beach:
1) I reviewed the comments in the shelter section and there are no negative posts.
2) On a weekly basis, Villa Flamenco Beach is actually cheaper. (at least for a studio.

I have stayed there many times and have never been disappointed.

Villa Famenco is fine and dandy but there are better and cheaper places on the island that's all.

Hi there- I think it all depends on what you are looking for. Costa Bonita resort is the ONLY resort in Culebra.. so if you are looking to stay in Culebra but want to feel like you are at a regular resort, this would be the place to go. It's not popular yet because they just finished building.

I, personally, didn't want to deal with plumbing problems, a/c issues, and am not personally into the whole rustic, rural experience.

So if you're looking for a hotel with standard amenities, Id recommend this one. Their website is www.costabonitaresort.com

Sheila,

I think the reason CB isn't popular is that it tries to attract a different type of visitor than Culebra appeals to. Culebra *IS* rustic and rural. There are plenty of places to go where you can stay in high rises on the beach, fast food or expensive dining, bungie-jumping, golf, parasailing, jet-skis, etc., etc. Folks come to Culebra to avoid this scene. People who seek this vacation experience will not enjoy Culebra, simply by staying at CB. I'd advise them to try the El Conquistador, near Fajardo.

Absolutely- Culebra typically appeals to tourists who are looking for the more rustic experience, but not everybody is like that- which is why I shared.

Many tourists would like to visit the beaches of Culebra, without having to rush back and forth on ferries or puddle jumpers in one day, so I thought this would be a good option to share if they did want a full service hotel.

Apparently, I am not alone as they are already sold out on many dates.

The notion that one should only go to Culebra if they are willing to live like the villagers is not legitimate. This is just another option so that Culebra can indeed cater to all types of tourists.

As long as the patrons of CB don't attempt to "upgrade" the island to their idea of paradise, and ruin mine, I won't disagree.

I think it's not popular because the locals refuse to support it, believing (justly in my opinion) that it will ruin their personal paradise. I personally hope they never get it up to speed and that they never attract enough customers to keep it running. Then it will just be an eyesore until the jungle grows over it.

I was thinking maybe it could go into an 'affordable housing' program, like they have in Aspen and Telluride. When mountain real estate got obnoxiously high, there was no place for working people to live. A failed resort was converted to apartments and the rents were subsidized by the city to keep the work force viable. If that happens to CB, I'm quitting my job and tending bar somewhere on Culebra. Tom Cruise I'm not, but I know a lot of bar tricks!

What an interesting post, this is my first time
visiting this site. I know both Vieques and
Culebra well. Debbie, you're either a travel
agent or related to someone in the CB family.
Nice try though. The locals think it is an eyesore.
It really looks like a housing project! I heard
they had a great pool, big deal.

Sorry - I don't understand your response. I very much dislike and oppose Costa Bonita. What in my post makes you think I like or support it???

Debbie,A million apologies. I said in another
post this was my first post. The person I was
referring to was Gail Meka at the head of the
Costa Bonita resort post . Anybody - is the
Mayoral the same who one had trouble with funds
in Vieques and Belize. I have property in
Vieques and it sounds like the same guy?

No problem! And yes, as I answered in your other post - Mayoral (Jose and Lisa Penfield) on Culebra affiliated with Bahia Marina are the same as from Vieques. Don't know about Belize.

Happy Diving!
