camping in Culebra without a car

My boyfriend and I are coming to stay in Culebra for 3 or 4 days. We plan to camp on Flamenco beach. We want to be able to explore a lot of the remote beaches and see the wildlife in the ocean, however we are leaning towards not getting a car to get around.
How easy is it to find the wildlife hotspots without a car from Flamenco beach camping?
Also, is there a place to lock up our stuff for the day if we go off exploring?
For anyone who has camped at Flamenco: is it worth it to bring our own tent and snorkeling gear or are island rates and equiptment pretty good?

PS...we are on a tight budget, so the alternative to a car for us would be walking or maybe bikes? I'm not really sure...any suggestiongs?

Public transport is good for Flamenco, unless you are staying close to that beach.
The walk there is far from Dewey, but public transport is about 2.00 each way.

We rented bycicles last time we were in culebra. We went from Dewey to Flamenco, from Dewey to Zoni, and to Melones. It was fun riding around all of culebra. You have to be in great shape though. You'll encounter steep hills just about everywhere. The way to Zoni beach is particularly nasty in terms of pedaling effort. Maybe you can try renting scooters. I'm not sure what rentals go for, but I imagine prices have to be between those of a car rental and bycicle rentals. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. What is Dewey? I wanted to go to some of the smaller islands. i was thinking of walking across the strip of land just west of Flamenco beach to head out to the islands of Luis Pena and other little islands around there. Are boat trips fairly reasonable? What about leaving our things on the camp grounds for the day? Will that be safe?

Dewey is downtown, where the ferry docks, if walking it is very far from Flamenco. The airport is midway, from both.
If you only intend to walk from Flamenco to hidden beaches, it is OK, but...
are you going to eat ?

In Flamenco food is limited ... I'd say from 1100 to 1730 more or less.
There is a bakery near the ariport, maybe for breakfast... but still a long good walk.
I do not know about the tents, have a close wacth for other responses regarding tent availability, in this forum.

I was there a week ago and I rented my scooter for $35 a day. Bikes were going for $25 a day. I never tried to talk them down in prices or anything so you might be able to.
I am not sure about prices for jeeps.
I would not want to try and get around by simply walking or on a bike. Most roads are in full sunlight and it would be very easy to get dehydrated with all the hills and long distances going from Flamenco camping area to anywhere.
It took me about 20 mins on a scooter to go from the airport to Zoni beach one way. It is about an 5 min scooter ride to downtown on a scooter from Flamenco. Taxi service seemed to be available all day long until around dusk especially at Flamenco and the downtown dock. $2 one way. There are also taxis that will come to and get you anywhere for a fee, but I don't know how much extra they would charge.
As for crime, I felt very safe in leaving my stuff anywhere I went.

you've got to be kidding! The taxis are there to serve the ferry... don't even think about trying to get a taxi when the ferry is due in.. we tried for an hour to get one with NO success,, we finally had no choice but to rent a car,,, come to find out, all the taxis were just sitting down at the dock. If you are staying at either of the Flamenco beach resorts, you need to know that the taxis don't like to go down that dirt road.. sorry for the bad news, but taxis are a joke....
