Small Beach Near Flamenco
Culebra, Puerto Rico

On maps and satilite photos there is a small beach just up the coast from Flamenco Beach. It looks very secluded. Has anyone been to this beach and if so, how easy is it to get there?

my wife and i hiked to it a couple of years ago. it wasn't that hard. there was a lot of washed up coral to walk on. i don't remember how long it took. 20-25 minutes? it was nice.

I am not trying to scare anyone or negatively impact tourism, but please be aware that there are military ordnance (bombs) that wash up on that beach and the rest of the peninsula. The peninsula and surrounding water (in addition to numerous other sites in Culebra) still have bombs left from past military practice that took place through the early 1970's. The campground area and beach bordering that were scanned for hazardous items and those were removed in previous years,. But the rocky/coral point you refer to was not cleared. It is not known for sure of the presence of bombs or degree of danger there until further field work takes place by the US Army Corps of Engineers but there is a fence in place and warning signs to tell visitors of this fact. The beach you refer to is called Playa Blanca and people do go there. Just please know not to pick up anything that you cannot identify and also know that a live bomb washed up from the water and was picked up there last year. There is an information kiosk at the campground with pictures of what the bombs look like, please check this when you go there. If you do see something , please tell campground personnel or call 787-742-3501 (PR Police) or 787-742-0115 (US Fish and Wildlife Service). Thanks

I don't think that many people know that Culebra and Vieques are a Superfund site, and certain areas can be quite hazardous. When diving, we see many pieces of ordnance, and there is no way to know whether they are unexploded. Well, okay, sometimes if there's an eel sticking his head out of the tube, then you know it's "dead". You can't be too careful when exploring either island.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

if you really want to check out hard to get to beaches, go to Mamacita's ask for a local named Chicading. He has a friend named Gilling who does boat tours. They are great guys, layed back and I'm sure very reasonable. My friends and I were there last week and spent 2 days out on the boat with them. If they ask who sent you tell them the crazy girls from New York, I'm sure they'll smile.
