We just returned from a wonderful week on Culebra - and cried when we left! Now, this is not to say that this island is for everyone...but it sure hit the spot for us!
If you want a resort - want spa treatments, tennis, golf, or haute cuisine, DO NOT GO TO CULEBRA! If you want to snorkel for the first time but cannot do it horizontally (ie: need to stand on the reefs) - DO NOT GO TO CULEBRA! If you cannot deal with interruptions in water and electricity, if you can't handle mosquitoes, geckos, and an occasional spider in your room, DO NOT GO TO CULEBRA!
If you want beautiful diving and snorkeling, want some of the nost beautiful beaches and water in the world, if you can slog through mud and dust to get to a good snorkeling spot, and understand not to ruin what you are there to see - GO TO CULEBRA! If you want to meet the nicest people on the face of the earth, and can afford to pay less-than-cheap rates for food and drink (a 6-pack of bottom-line beer will run you about 8 bucks), GO TO CULEBRA!
Have drinks at Dinghy Dock - Judy is the best bartender we know. Eat at Mamacitas or Las Delicias. Stay at Villa Fulladoza (and say hi to Myrna and Carlos for us!).
But most of all, break down and rent a boat from Butch Pendergast at Culebra Boat Rental - that was one of the smartest things we have ever done!! Do it your first or last days, and give up your rental car those days - you won't break even, but the experience will more than make up for it!
