i just came back from 3 days, 4 nights in culebra and wanted give my feedback on the dining i did there. we prepared our own breakfasts and lunches during our stay, and we ate 2 nights at ricci's and 1 night at barbara rosa's. (we were planning on eating at juanita banana's the last night but waited too long to make a reservation and they were full, so we opted for ricci's again since we were staying at tamarindo.)
ricci's was great - i thought the food was delicious and the drinks (the bushwalkers!) did the trick. the tostones were at just the level of crispiness that i like! you have to start your ricci's experience by having a few drinks on the picnic tables while watching the sunset, then move inside for dinner. i only have two negative things to say about ricci's - it is a tad on the expensive side, so if you are trying to enjoy culebra on the cheap, this might not be a good spot for you. (a meal for two, two drinks each, set us back about $65.) the other drawback is the lack of waitstaff. our poor waitress was extremely nice, but she was waiting on 8-9 tables, plus people eating at the bar. consequently, it takes *awhile* to place your order and have your meal. my boyfriend and i were in no rush to eat, we were enjoying the bushwalkers too much! but other groups walked out because of the slow service. ricci, if you see this...hire another waiter!
barbara rosa's was another excellent, and in this case inexpensive meal. barbara is able to keep costs down because you order at the counter and it's byob. i had fish and tostones (instead of chips) and my boyfriend had crabcakes. all of it was delicious. ended the meal with a brownie sundae - yummie.
i'd also like to add that i went back 3 times for cookies at cafe delizioso at the airport. the cookies were great, and it's a nice little place. but you'll be hard pressed to get "service with a smile" there. the three people that served me all seemed depressed to be stuck in that little booth! i know everyone has their bad days, and i heard that the owner is a self-proclaimed night owl so maybe it was too early in the day for him to be nice to me, but come on guys, it can't be that bad of a job. i worked at a bbq restaurant and smelled like pork everyday for an entire summer. now *that* was bad. :)
all in all, my experience on culebra was an amazing one and i can't wait to go back!
