Best way to get there from San Juan???

WHAT DO YOU ALL RECOMMEND....

Ferry or plane...

Obviously the ferry is much cheaper. But it also involves renting a car no? So is paying the extra money worth it? Is renting a car and taking a ferry confusing?

Hello ... the ferry is cheaper, but it involves not only the RESERVATION for vehicle transporting ( which is done only on weekends, and there is no insurance coverage ) it also requires for you to be very early at the dock, if you wish to get in.
There are two departures... close to 0900 ( you have to be there before 0800 ) and close to 1300 ( you better be there before 1200 ).

In Culebra there are few car rentals, so better reserve with enough anticipation, the lodging is very hard to get without reservations too.
This is due to the winter season.
I'd say if you do not have reservation, have a very good plan B, and always the plane is easier.

Sorry Ferry reservations need to be made in advance, and they work only on WEEKDAYS...

I just got back from Culebra, I flew in on Isla Nena airlines and had a connecting flight to San Juan. I made my connecting flights and everything, but it is pretty stressful because weather, or inspections, or mechanical problems can ground you or delay you. If you do fly, make sure you have quite a large window for which to get your flight out of San Juan. If I did it again, I may take a cab and the ferry.

I think it really depnds on how many people, how much lugagge, when (traffic) and for how long you are going to Culebra.

E.g.: A party of two with a lot of lugagge, staying for a two week vacation, arriving at 3 am is definitely better off taking a cab to the ferry.

or if you go alone, sta7y for a night or two arrive an hour before isla nena takes off - fly!

etc etc.

oye. this a bit of a loaded question. we just flew on Vieques Air Link. all went well both ways (well, a bit of a delay in arriving, but whatever). we had wanted to rent a jeep in San Juan and ferry over but alas, no ferrys on the weekends. We rented a jeep on island and then we were told there were no reservations left for the week to get over to PR, all booked.

Jokes on us, almost every ferry that left was EMPTY. So, yes, make reservations but go to the dock, you are sure to get on. i wish we found this out earlier, it was several locals that told us before we left.

making the reservation for the ferry is the hard part, not the getting on :)
