Getting Married on Culebra

Author: Erin (---.ne.client2.attbi.com) Date:   12-31-04 10:57 My fiance and I are finding out that planning a wedding in the US is SOOO stressful. We are thinking about escaping from all the traditions and rules that go along with a wedding here and heading for Culebra. I would like to fly down my own minister from Massachusetts to perform the ceremony. I would really appreciate some travel advice though. We plan on arriving a few days before the wedding so that everything is squared away. We were hoping to stay in a hotel for those days and head to the Tamarindo Beach Cottages for a week or so for the honeymoon. BUT we need some help! We have family and friends that would be coming to the wedding and would like to recommend a good place for them to spend a few days (preferably not near our honeymooning location). We were also hoping to take everyone out to dinner afterwards to have a small reception. Any suggestions? Also, should we think about renting a car for the entire time we are there? Villa Boheme would be a nice place for the relatives and friends to stay at while on your honeymoon. VB is in Dewey which is about a 10 minute drive from Tamarindo. Never stayed at VB, but walked around the premises and their courtyard is very pretty. My husband and I did stay at Tamarindo for two whole weeks. We loved it! If your lucky you may have Tamarindo all to your selves. Depending what time of year your getting married. My husband and I were there during the off season Oct. '04 The first week no other guests stayed there. PARADISE!!! Sunsets are gorgous. Snorkelling is excellent along that part of the island. Flamenco Beach is a five minute drive away. Tamarindo does have a fleet of their own car rentals. You may also want to check out Jerry's Jeeps and Carlos Jeep Rentals as well. Club Seabourne just south of Dewey would be something you may want to check out for your reception. For Culebra it is a more upper scale kind of place. Very nice restaurant and surroundings. The beach at Tamarindo Estates is beautiful and they have a great restaurant called Ricc'is. Perhaps you could get married right there and have the restaurant handle the dinner. It is fairly private and if I remember correctly they have a small clubhouse adjacent to the restaurant with restrooms where your guests could change clothes. This spot is wonderful for sunsets. Maybe you could do a sunset wedding with a small reception right there. When is all this taking place? Again, good luck and best wishes.

I do like the idea of a sunset wedding, but I don't think I want the family to stay at the same place we are (since its supposed to be alone time). I like what I'm hearing about the Tamarindo, and I think we really want to stay there after the wedding. We definately like the idea of seclusion. We weren't planning anything too big for a reception...we'd really like a restaurant with good food. We plan on having a big party when we get back to the US for all the relatives. I think a sunset wedding on the beach would be beautiful, which beach would you recommend? I guess the ideal would be a small chapel overlooking the beach...but I have yet to find anything like that. Author: Didi (---.usdoj.gov) Date:   01-03-05 11:46 I go to Culebra every year, and rent a house called "Casa del Sol" which is next to Club Seabourne. The house has 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, a full kitchen, large dining room and living room, and has a deck that wraps around the house. Since it is on a hill, the views are wonderful! If your relatives like each other enough to stay in one house, this would put you on the other side of the island. It's also grat being able to cook... Didi

But my sisters have seven children (aged 6-15). Culebra doesn't seem like the most entertaining place for kids, do you think I should advise them to bring the kids? ~Erin

My wife and I have been going to culebra for four years now and if it was me doing it I would strongly consider renting a house which gives you privacy, not that Culebra is crowded. Tamarindo will cost you juat as much and it is not nearly as nice as a house that gives you everything. Believe me the houses for rent are incredible. There is no such thing as beachfront in Culebra but you are as close as 200 yards. Tamarindo has its advantages but the beach is mostly coral and wherever you stay on Culebra there is a sandy beach nearby. Contact culebraislandrealty.com if you want to look at the rentals. Villa Boheme is the nicest hotel on the island so I would recomend that. Also if you rent a car, which is a must go through Jerry's jeeps. He is a real treat and will tell you anything you need to know. Also he is right accross from the airport. If you need I can reccomend the best houses. Ron

I like the idea of the houses with a small secluded beach right near the house. We also might be looking to rent one of these houses for one week after the wedding and then maybe try a hotel for a few exta days afterward. It would be nice to try out a few places...that way we'll know where to stay when we return! :) Any good suggestions? Erin

Author: Jay Schwerman (---.com) Date:   01-07-05 10:48 Erin, congrats on the wedding. We were just in Culebra and saw a new "resort" that looked perfect for little kids. They have a pool and it's located on the bay, about 10 mins from where you are staying. I think it's called Costa Bonita Resort, also Club Seaborne might be a good place for kids to stay, they have a pool also and the restaurant there is great.

Author: julie (209.190.129.---) Date:   01-07-05 16:59 Erin- check out Villa Flamenco. they are condo-style apartments right on flamenco beach. there are two establishments on Flamenco beach, and these are a little more upscale than the other ones. Club Seabourne also looks really nice. There's a new resort too-- i cannot rememeber the name but the restaurant is Juanita Bananas. If you want something really casual, the Dinghy Dock is really lovely and is right on the water with good food. I'd say it could 75 or so.

Wedding woes

Author: Erin (---.ma.charter.com) Date:   01-11-05 22:51 Thank you for all the advice. Unfortunately, my family is not as geared up about our decision to wed on Culebra instead of here in the US. I've finally talked one of my sisters into the plan and she's excited with me now. However, a large obstacle remains. My other sister (with four kids) has VERY little money. (We are talking about deciding to pay for heat or food during some winter months) I don't know how I'm going to get them there. I am only 22 and still in college, but I'm trying to find some way that they can join me there. She's never been out of the US or even on a real vacation and she and her husband never had a real honeymoon. He's losing his job in three months which makes things even worse. I know Culebra is a relatively inexpensive vacation spot (especially for what you get) but does anyone have any advice or tips to get the cheapest airfare and lodging? My family is so important to me and I want them to be there with me on the big day. I thought about giving them money for a hotel one night and some for camping a couple more nights, but I can't pay for the entire trip for all of them (taxi, ferry, food...it all adds up so fast!) I spent the recent New Year with friends who live on Culebra for the first time and it's a wonderful place. The resort mentioned above, Costa Bonita, might be a perfect fit to house your family with the children who are there to share the big day with you. I was fortunate enough to stay there during the Holidays and while it is practically brand new (I think we were the first guests in our room), by June '06 I'm certain it will be fully up and running - they will have a full water-sports facility including snorkeling/scuba, sailing, fishing, etc. The resort is right on the water with wonderful views of the bay and the food was excellent. They even have a space that is ideal for a small reception. Sounds to me like you and your fiance should take a little expeditionary trip to see what you like best, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Best of Luck... J.P.
