Culebra Recommendation: Day trips

I recently went to Culebra and had an enjoyable stay. I have one recommendation: do not go with Captain Luis Grundler for any of your day trips. He is the one who books day trips at Mamacita's, but I do not think he is an employee of the hotel. I am Puerto Rican, have lived in other countries, and have traveled extensively throughout the world. I have never encountered such rude, mocking, disparaging behavior from someone who is offering a service (and taking your money) in my life. He mocked a woman who was on the tour with us, and would not accommodate a simple request that she had (to be left off at a certain location on Culebrita, which he said was "unsafe for boating", but, when we arrived, found over three boats present). He also had the nerve to laugh at people who were trying to disembark/embark from a slippery boat in the middle of a rainstorm into two feet of water (not on shore). I was planning on paying him with a credit card, but when I saw that he had to write down all the pertinent information and would then "charge it later", I chose to pay cash, as I would not trust someone who just insulted the majority of the people on the trip with his behavior. I recommend looking to many of the other "day trip" operators on Culebra for your day trip needs.

I am also from Puerto Rico, and I do not recomend this Captain. I have witnessed the same guy drinking beers at the Mamacita's bar, then leaving to pick up a group of guest.

I have taken many trips with Luis. He is always accommodating and is great with all of his guests.

I know there are often issues with taking boats into Tortuga Beach when there are high waves. I am sure you can agree, that when it comes to safety... it is better to be safe when you have people on your boat that you are responsible for -- paying or not. Letting them off at the snorkel beach is much safer in these times. Sure there are often boats inside Tortuga when you get there --- but consider that those boats may have made it inside of the bay before the waves picked up (which could mean 30 minutes or 3 hours -- the weather changes quickly).

Always consider that there are several sides to serving the public... Luis' customers do not have the experience of personally being responsible for passengers on the boat, nor for maintaining the responsibility that comes with holding a captains license. Consider that he was actually doing what was best for the passengers.

Estimada sra. .... lamentablemente esta sra. desde el primer momento
queria cambiar la ruta establecida yo no puedo cambiar mi ruta de trabajo
por un cliente yo se lo explique desde el primer momento
esta Sra. desde que llegamos hasta el momento que la recogi
seguia protestando ......... yo tengo un sistema de trabajo y no lo
cambiaria por una queja sin fundamentos si alguien se ofendio
tenga mis disculpas nuevamente yo personalmente soy muy resposable
con mi trabajo si a usted no le agrado lo siento mucho .
dejeme explicarle que ser Capitan de una embarcacion no es solo guiar
la lancha es manterla en condiciones y ser responsable de su tripulacion
o pasajeros ,,,,,, hasta el momento he tratado de hacerlo lo mejor
posible y gracias a dios me ha dado resultado ......
si alguien pienza..... que he sido en algun momento negligente
con mis pasajeros haga una querrella formal en el forum adecuado
con nombre y apellido y si es cierto
yo pagare las consecuencias
de no ser asi el querellado las sufrira ........Absolutamente NO
permitire que se me difame de esta manera y sin alguien tiene
algo contra mi persona venga y digame en la cara no detras de una computadora............

I have taken Luis' boat many times. I NEVER felt unsafe, disrespected or not taken care of in a very hospitable manner!

I also agree with Luis, that if someone makes a post like gmu student he should at least provide an email address or some sort of identification. Some are serious accusations.

In regards to the credit card: How would you expect to take a credit card on a small launch on a small island? It sounds to me that he was trying to accommodate you, not being set up to take credit cards for a taxi ride (?!) - when was the last time you paid with a cc for a taxi? come on!

I hope this thread will bring Luis LOTS of business :)

I had traveled with Luis from Culebra Island to Fajardo, and I trust his judment, he is a good captain. He has a very good sense of humor!!! There is nothing wrong with having a good time!!!! I believe that a good personality adds to the trip!! After all, we are having a vacation!!!
Luis, keep up the good work!! Some of us really apprecciate it!!!!

Saludos, es lamentable que utilicen este forvm para degradar a una persona
especialmente al Sr. Luis mi familia y yo hemos pasados momentos muy agradables
con Luis hemos compartido varios viajes con el y en ningun momento nos a descuidado
y ha sido muy responsable hacia nosotros y mis hijos .
Cada vez que hemos estado en Mamacitas hemos notado el aprecio que le tienen a el
siempre trata de ayudar a las personas .
la persona que ha compartido con el sabe la clase de persona que es ....................
les recomendamos a Culebrita es una aventura tremenda.

Sr.Grundler usted no se recordara de mi yo si de usted,
yo y mi familia el verano pasado estavamos llegando a Culebra de noche
y la lancha tuvo un desperfecto mecanico Sea Rescue nos recomendo
y lo llamamos , usted fue y nos rescato ya que ellos estavan
lejos y se tardarian , le agradesco por su pronta accion.
Entiendo por lo que he leido que hay alguien que le quiere hacer
que su negocio fracase , lamentablemente esta persona no sabe, lo esta
tomando personal hacia usted.
Sr. Grundler usted no es figura publica es un ciudadano , estas personas
estan atentando contra su persona , su familia y su negocio o trabajo,
eso usted No ... puede permitirlo ya que su nombre... No ... su negocio esta
siendo difamado .
Sr.Grundler de necesitar asistencia legal dejeme saber con mucho gusto
lo representaria , gente como esta no sabe lo que hace .......
ni los problemas que pueden enfrentar por difamacion.

Hi, I'm very surprised to read all that type of lies. I believe and I know that he is a highly responsible and over all a qualified person to do his business, not like other that believes that are able or has the right to do what they do. To those people that don’t know that do water taxi requires a serial of permits and most important USCG license. I invite to ask other "anyone" other ""day trip" operator" like gmu student says if they have the proper permits, registration and USCG license to operate that type of business. Or just ask if they have, at least, the USCG license. For gmu student, USCG means United State Coast Guard, ok. So gmu student, shut your mouth off.

Parece mentira que tenga que leer como barren con la reputacion y el servicio de la gente que dia a dia trabajamos y brindamos servicio a todo aquel que lo solicite en Culebra. EL capitan Luis Grundler esta debidamente certificado y licenciado por la Guardia Costanera. Tiene ademas un seguro de responsabilidad publica para sus clientes, tiene ademas un sinnumero de rescates maritimos incluyendo en horas de la madrugada para ayudar a cualquier persona que se tenga problemas con su embarcacion (sino preguntenle a Maripily). He viajado en varias ocasiones con el capitan Grundler y su experiencia es excelente incluso mi hijo menor ( de 11 años) realiza travesias con el Capitan Grundler pues en el futuro el quiere ser Capitan de embarcaciones.
Al estudiante que escribio le doy un consejo, en Culebra se olvidan todas las formalidades a las cuales estan acostumbrados, somos mas informales y mas humanos. Tambien el Capitan Grundler es un ser humano con virtudes y defectos que tenemos la raza humana. No es un billete de cien para caerle bien a todo el mundo y cuando se trata de seguridad, señores el tiene una vasta experiencia en esta rama. no le dañes la reputacion a ningun ser humano sin antes haber hablado con este. Has querido ser juez, jurado y verdugo del Capitan Grundler. En estos momentos en que la Isla de Culebra se encuentra incomunicada con la Isla Grande por la huelga que tienen los empleados de la Autoridad de los Puertos Luis Gruindler ha dicho presente con su embarcacion para ayudar a nuestros cuidadanos culebrenses que necesiten ser transportados hacia la Isla Grande. Espero que puedas recapacitar, sentarte con el Capitan Grundler y tratar de revindicarle su posicion como Capitab que bastante esfuerzo, tiempo y dinero le ha tomado.

para seguir sirviendo a este pueblo que quiero mucho ........... la gente se
piensa que vivir en culebra es facil....... tienen toda la razon .....................
pero no viven aqui... estan de vacaciones y de vacaciones todo es lindo se los aseguro...............
mas cuando la gente me ve haciendo mi trabajo ............les puedo de dicir
que no es facil .......... .......
....... pero dejeme explicarles algo
en culebra no hay mucho o nada que hacer solo .. playa y trabajo es es mi caso.......trabajo tengo gracias a dios y playa todo los dias .....pero mis mejores momentos los pasos con mis mejores amigos en Mamacitas
yo personalmente la paso muy bien ......tengo muchas amistades de aqui
de culebra como de todo el mundo ......siempre he tratado de ser un buen
ciudadano .
Les doy un consejo no juzguen a nadie en 25 min.......
creo que no es justo no todos los dia se amanece soliado.............

I feel that Luis is a very experienced and competant captin. I have been with him from Puerto Rico to the BVI and never have we had any difficulties. I am a licensed captain and would not hesitate to recommend captian Luis.
