Is anyone planning a trip to Culebra that is interested in sharing a taxi from San Juan to Fajardo in order to catch the ferry on July 11? If so, please contact me (Ken) at kmotolenich@earthlink.net.

Much appreciated,
ken

Thanks

The last time I used Padin, they charged us $20 a head.

Thanks for the info. I guess the $20 a head does not always apply. I just called Padin and the woman on the phone said it would be $60 for two (a bit more at $30 a head). Do you know if this is because they charge a flat rate per van trip from San Juan to Fajardo (i.e., $60, no matter if it is 1, 2, or 3 people)?

Taking a taxi from the airport to Fajardo can be risky-- when you go to the taxi stand, the woman who calls the taxis will tell you one rate to go to Fajardo (I think it's supposed to be like $40 or something) but when you get to Fajardo, it's invariably a lot more, especially if you have luggage. There is little control over taxis. Even if you set a rate with someone beforehand, they may not honor it when they pick you up. The rates are inflated because they basically charge you round trip because it's unlikely they can fill the cab either back to SJ if they are a metro cab or from FJDO to SJ if it's a fajardo cabby.

It's usually around the same price or cheaper to take the plane if you are only one person. If you are two people, it's slightly more expensive to take the plane but might be worth it for speed, comfort, and planning so you know exactly how much you are going to spend.

can you get a taxi from Fajardo to a beach that has surf, and for how much? I saw there are beaches right north of Fajardo on a map that show surf.

It all depends on what time you get into San Juan, but I have been there quite a few times this last year and I always head to Culebra. I usually spend less than $4 on my trip to Fajardo for the Ferry. It's a little difficult the first time, but I've not had a problem, especially since I now know how to do it. Honestly it doesn't take much more time than a taxi either. In Puerto Rico you can travel from town to town in Publicos (Public Vans)...for 65 cents. They are easy to recognize, because they are 15 passenger vans with the name of the town painted on the top of the windshield. What I do is hop on a bus from San Juan to Rio Piedras (65 cents). Then when you get to Rio Piedras..the easiest thing to do is ask where you can catch a publico to Fajardo....it is pretty close to the Bus station, then just look for a van that says Fajardo on the winshield and flag them down. Tell them you want to go to Fajardo for $3. If you don't tell them...they will probably try to act like a taxi and charge $40 or $50, because that's what they do to tourists. (For the $3, they will pick up others along the way, however, they only stop along the main road, so it really doesn't take that much more time than a taxi. Tell the driver you want to go to the ferry. They will drop you off on the road that leads to the ferry dock. From there, publicos are always taking people down to the dock, so just wait or start walking and in a few minutes you will see a publico....any publicos heading that way are heading to the dock. Flag them down and tell them you are headed to the ferry and they will charge you 65 cents. I've found that publicos are a lot of fun, because you also meet a lot of people with useful information when you ride in them. The only thing about publicos is that they stop running around 5pm, but the ferry to Culebra is off before then anyway. Good luck with your travels....take care.

I think its better to rent a car at san juan and take the car to culebra. the ferry cost no more than $40 per car and the driver pass is included and extra passenger will cost no more than $6. from fajardo to culebra and back, but you got to make reservations

Do you know about how much? Do I need a jeep to get to the beaches in Vieques or will a new rental car be sufice?

HI, there. You mentioned about the public buses -- Is it true that it takes 4 hours to get to Fajardo from SJ Airport?

Ken,
I was just in Culebra. We took the ferry from Fajardo. Big mistake. ALthough it ended up OK, it was (1) extremely crowded due to PR holiday (2) took 1.75 hours, with some rough seas causing nausea for some (3) it's a long ride from San Juan to Fajardo. (4) killed 1/2 our first day getting there.

I recommend taking the short plane ride from San Juan airport to Culebra and back. it's cheap, takes only 20 mins and much more convenient.

Other notes (in case you're new there too) you can have fun visiting the remote beaches, but you have to rent a car or moped. The other way to get around is by van-taxi, the ubiquitous transportation on the island ($3 each way) but they won't be reliable for taking you to remote areas. Also, I found the scuba diving to be mediocre, we didn't see much more than I saw snorkling.

Flamenco beach is gorgeous, but beware of Culebra Beach VIllas - they run out of water almost everyday due to some pump issue.
Scott
