Bicycle
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi everyone!
Thank you for information you provide on this forum! This forum was the most useful on finding needed information about Culebra!

I’m the first-timer planning to camp on Culebra for 6 weeks in January and February. Since 6 weeks kind of long time, my plan is to buy my own bicycle that I can use to get around the island, to explore island, to exercise. I’m planning going fishing everyday (if possible), going to the gym (if possible), going to the store, to different snorkeling places and beaches, and I think it will be more convenient and probably even chipper to have my own bicycle.

First of all, what do you think about my plan? Do you approve it?
And second, where can I buy not expensive bicycle?

I was thinking about buying it at Wal-Mart, after arriving to the PR. Than ride the bicycle to the ferry and than take cargo ferry to Culebra.
What I can’t figure out is at which wal-mart to buy? How to get to the wal-mart from the airport? This kind of information, how to get from point A to point B, is hard to find. Or maybe there are places that sell used bikes? How much bike from wal-mart might cost?

Can you, please, help?!

Hello,
There is a Wal-Mart in the town of Fajardo (same town to take the ferry to Culebra). At Fajardo, you can take the public bus (public taxi) for $3 to get to Wal-Mart. I think owning a bike is the most economical choice since you will be there for 6 weeks. I just got back from camping on Flamenco beach myself, I was there for only 2 weeks, so I just take a taxi or walk or ride (golf cart) with other campers that I met.

You can have John, with John's Publico pick you up at SJU. He will be glad to stop at WalMart enroute to the ferry dock in Fajardo and can possibly buy your ticket for you, in advance. Have a great time. I am envious!!

The bike idea is fine, the Walmart idea not so good. Our second time in Culebra we did just what you are thinking of doing. We got the bikes in the Walmart in Fajardo. The Walmart bikes were awful. It reached the point where my wife had to walk her's downhill because the brakes were so untrustworthy. I did get some parts under warranty but they arrived the day before we left. Until then it was crazy glue holding parts on. Didn't inspire confidence. BTW I am a reasonably experienced biker and do most of the work on my own bikes.

My advice, if you do go the Walmart route, don't get their least expensive bike and check it out thoroughly before you leave the store. If you don't normally do your own bike repairs, you might want to rethink the plan. If you do your own repair work, bring a repair kit. One last thought, I was able to buy replacement tubes from the bike rental on the island but you might want to bring some with you and a pump. The acacia thorns can be wicked.

Thank you everyone!

Laura, I saw on this forum mentioning about Wal-Mart in Fajardo, but could not find it on the map (even with google’s help). Finally found it yesterday on some kind of local map.

I checked your youtube videos and I like them very much! I was especially interested in hammock, since I would like to sleep in the hammock too, but I’m planning to bring also a tent just in case, plus that way I will have place to store my backpack.

Did people walk by your hammock to the beach? And what was that fire? :) Was it comfortable to sleep in the hammock every night? I’ve never slept in the hammock.

Vicki, idea with John’s Publico is great, but… expensive… For one person it’s a steep price. It probably would be over $70 (with tips). I should have bought earlier airplane tickets for almost that price, and than from Culebra I could've taken a ferry to the Wal-Mart. But now the price for plane tickets are $115. If I could share the cost of John’s Publico with at least one more person, than it would be great. But HOW to find that significant other? :) :(

Arroz, those thoughts crossed my mind before! I know that Wal-Mart doesn’t have good quality. If there was alternative, I would consider it, but it looks like Wal-Mart is the only alternative. Last time I’ve done bike repairs probably over 15 years ago. Repairs definitely not on my to do list :(. If I will have to do repairs, than I probably will look for tools on islands. Don’t really want to take any tools with me. Thank you for advice! Maybe I will at least bring some repair patches.

Hi Muzaico,
I just want to say that open fire are not allowed on the campground, and the fire was not my doing, it was another camper that camped near me.

It was my first time sleeping in a hammock too, and I did it for the 2 weeks I was there. For me it was very comfortable, but a little bit chilly at night cause I was so closed to the beach, ocean waves, and lots of wind.
Having a tent would be a good idea.

Yeah, people that camped near me do walked by to get to the beach, but I don't mind, but this happened during the afternoon hours, which I am not there anyways.

This was the hammock that I used.

I did check camping rules, that’s way was asking :). I only need fire for cooking purposes, but I plan to buy small stove. I absolutely wish I could do fishing for food! I’m dreaming about it :). I know nothing about fishing or fishing equipment but I love eating fish. I really don’t want to eat junk food or spend a lot of money on good food every day for 6 weeks.
And a chill is not a problem for me! I wear t-shirts all year long (up north), even in 10F :). Yesterday I run for 1.5 hour in 36F in a t-shirt. And I’m not a runner at all, I just needed to go to the post office and my car wasn't home.
Breeze, sound of waves is what I actually want and why I want to sleep in hammock. For these reasons I don’t want to sleep in closed tent. But of course it’s possible to take the rainfly off, than the effect would be pretty much the same. Will see.
Your hammock looks great, especially for already having bug net. I already bought this hammock: http://www.amazon.com/Eagles-Nest-Outfitters-Hammock-2012/dp/B001DDTDFQ/ref=pd_sbs_sg_14 based on reviews, but it doesn’t have bug net, I’m going to add it.
Was it difficult to find a place for hammock right next to the beach? That is exactly what I want!

Hi MuzaiCo,

The only place that you can hang a hammock close to the beach is in zone E, I would say my spot was one of the best spots to do so. It really depends on how many people are camping in that area, but you can always move around as people leave their site. If you haven't brought a stove yet this is what I used while I was there. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ENDROMW/?tag=httpwwwyou041-20
It is an awesome little pocket stove with ignition. With over 800 reviews and they got 4.5 stars and cost $6 you can't go wrong.
Also, at the camp site you can buy your fuel for the stove at concession stand #4 for about $7 Coleman propane fuel (16.4 oz). When I was there since it was low season they only had it on the weekend, so I would suggest you to buy a few at time. For food, I brought a lot of premade and dehydrated food that I made myself from home.

Cheers,

Also, you can go into town and buy produce (groceries), you can also buy meat and fish too, but you would have to ask around for that.

I have camped many times on Flamenco. 2014 I will be going April 23 to May 9th. I take a tent and hammock and stay in zone E. I agree with previous posts that a tent is good to have. I spent time in the hammock but the tent was nice to stay out of wind, rain and have a place to keep things out of sight, i.e. to reduce risk of theft. I've never had anything stolen from my camp but I always try to remove temptation whenever possible. As for a cook stove, I take a Coleman stove that uses the Coleman canisters. I enjoy going into town for dinner some times but to save money, its great to cook in camp and fish. In Zone E when I was there last, camp fires were allowed in confined, designated areas. Firewood was tough to find though. I used BBQ briquets. Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back to Culebra soooo much. Dave

Laura, thank you for tip on a stove! It’s in my cart now. I was looking at that stove before too, and also was looking at similar stove but with larger burner. But I didn’t know what kind of fuel is available on the island. But now thanks to you I know that I indeed can use that stove. For how long do you think one canister lasts?

I know that I can buy food at the grocery store, but it would be a shame to buy frozen fish from a store when you can have fresh from the ocean! :)

Dave, thank you for your post!
I’m planning on staying in the zone E too, and I have the same thoughts about the tent as you do! And I have the same ideas about food too :). I definitely will go to town to have lunch or dinner, but definitely not all the time and I for sure don’t want to eat junk food. My mission for those 6 weeks is to eat healthy (if possible), rest, and burn as much fat from my body as possible (daily running, biking, swimming, going to the gym).

Do you fish in Culebra? Any inside information?

And how do you get from airport to Culebra?

I can't wait to get to Culebra too, it was -25F few hours ago in my neck of the woods….

Since many of Culebra's waters are a U.S. Fish and Wildlife preserve where all fishing is prohibited, please be sure you know where the boundaries to those are, and abide by them. A few years back, no permits were required, but there were rumors that they were implementing them.

Happy (and legal) fishing!

Hi Doug,

From my research (on this forum mostly), fishing store has map of places where fishing is allowed on Culebra. I definitely will check with them first. Not planning on braking any laws :).

Last year was my first year fishing on Culebra. It was a lot of fun. Caught some red snapper. For sure check on places where fishing is permitted. I met some new friends while camping who had brought fishing gear. We fished on Flamenco Beach near the "Tank", just off of Zone E. Late afternoon we fished for small bait fish then early evening put in our lines for larger stuff. We had a fire pit going and filleted the fish, BBQ'd it and shared with everyone. It was tons of fun. From airport to Flamenco I try to get a taxi. I travel with a backpack and on more than one occasion I've walked it. Like you, I try to exercise and eat healthy when on Culebra.

Great info Dave, and very promising! I haven’t seen anyone mentioning fishing on Culebra beach.
I’m still doing my research on what kind of equipment to buy. You are not going to believe, but I practically never fished in my life… I fished maybe 3-4 times when I was little but remember only one small fish that I caught. So…. I want to catch up on what I missed :). But I know nothing about fishing. Already spent many hours trying to find out what kind of equipment I need, now trying to decide what size and brand of rod and reel to buy. And I know nothing about lures and sinkers and bites and so on… And of course I know nothing about fish, their names, which ones you can eat and which ones not good for food. Of course pretty fish needs to be released, that I know :). I sound like a girl ))).

I’m thinking on buying 9’ rod (don’t know which brand to choose), and maybe Penn Battle 5000 reel.

It might be overkill for first-timer, but I like quality product, and want it to last.
