Snorkeling on Flamenco Beach
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My boyfriend and I are planning a visit to PR and would like to visit Flamenco Beach. If we go on our own (no group tour) is there safe accessible snorkeling off the beach that we can just walk/swim to without a boat having to take us? Or would doing a tour be the best bet? Also, can reservations be made in advance or tickets purchased on line for the ferry? And can anyone advice a ball park figure on what a taxi would cost to take us from the ferery dock to the beach? Thanks soooo much. We cant wait to get there!! :)

You can snorkle at Flamenco. Facing the water, go all the way to the right. There is a reef that runs along the shore. You can also take a 15 minute walk to Carlos Rosario from the Flamenco parking lot.

In theory if you make arrangements with a driver in advance to take you from SJU to the ferry dock in Fajardo, they can get you tickets in advance. In practice, it doesn't always work. Our first visit John, our driver, said he had stopped by a few times and was not able to get tickets for us, although he had sometimes been able to do it in the past. You can ask your driver to get you tickets, but they may not be able to do so. Online or phone reservations are not an option.

Publicos from the ferry dock are $3 each way, I believe. One of the things we love about Culebra is the variety of quality snorkeling that can be accessed by simply wading in and swimming a short distance. In addition to Flamenco and Carlos Rosario, Tamarindo, Melones, and Punta Soldado offer snorkeling right from the beach. If you are just there for the day, Flamenco for sunbathing and swimming and Carlos Rosario/Tamarindo for snorkeling would be my recommendation. Take a look at Google Earth, or even the satellite maps on Google Maps, and you can see the reefs and the trail leading from Flamenco to Carlos Rosario and Tamarindo.

Lots of snorkeling without a guide or a boat....search the forums as it has some great recent threads.

Peace out
