Howzit? Wifey and I will be on island FEB 5-15 th. Super stoked!

We are booked to get our open water certifications thru Aquatic Adventures and doing our online training now. Anyone have experience with these folks?

Also looking to rent paddleboards and hit up Culebrita for one day. Any place do rentals or maybe someone want to rent their own. No lessons needed.

Many thanks!

Matt

We have made numerous dives with Taz Hamrick and his lovely wife Ann, on the Razmataz!! You have chosen the right outfit to do your openwater checkouts with. They are first rate, all the way. You might be able to rent paddleboards but not use them to go to Culebrita. It can be a rough crossing and you do not even do it by kayak. Taz can drop you off on Culebrita should you chose to visit there. Tell Taz and Ann Rodney and Vicki from TN say hi!! Enjoy yourselves. We have been divers since 1977!!

Hi Vicki. Thanks for vote of confidence on the Aquatic Crew.

Regarding paddling to Culebrita. I have some extensive paddleboard experience including a 37 mile 10 hour crossing of Cape Cod Bay. Also done numerous 10+ mile races in cold and choppy Atlantic waters and 15+ knot winds. Not that I'm looking to be on the next episode of "I shouldn't be alive" but I'm pretty stoked to do this paddle after reading here another dude taking the voyage. I'll do some more research and make an educated decision.

Thanks for your help

Matthew,

In my experience, most rental places and guide outfits need to accommodate the general public to make the experiences they offer safe, fun and pleasantly memorable. This doesn't mean that you, assuming you are qualified to objectively assess your own abilities and the limitations of each member of your group, can't plan for fun and challenging activities that are within your group's capabilities. And I do want to stress "the group's capabilities". We have kayaked to Culebrita, and have also decided not to kayak to Culebrita. Our decisions were based on the realities at each time. Most, not all of us, being capable "open-water" swimmers and watercraft familiar, have made the crossing when others may not have. You really need to be willing to listen to the advice you are given by the local businesses and their assessment of the conditions, and also, in the end, judge for yourself. If you have your own gear, then you should know the assumed risks. I am not one to tell some one "you can't do this or that", but I will tell people who are willing to listen, "know and take serious the limitations of all in your group". We have done open water swims with newbies and always have condition worthy watercraft accompanying us for the untested human factors. There is nothing like a panic attack to dampen the fun. These words are all just due diligence. Fun can be found everywhere on Culebra. I have never, ever been disappointed by the opportunities on Culebra or the hospitality of the Culebrenses. My suggestion, regardless of if it is Culebrita or Luis Pena, would be to NOT do it on a weekend day or holiday. Less people and less boating traffic, the main reason.

In full agreement with Vicki, Taz is excellant choice. My middle grandson, age
13 certified with Taz over Thanksgiving and dove again with Taz over Christmas with his older brother, age 16 (who also certified with Taz a couple of Thanksgivings ago). They also did a night dive with Taz that they said was super.

Paddleboarding/kayaking to Culebrita is really DUMB!!! During February the waters on the north side of island can be pretty rough especially in the afternoon. Do your kayaking to Luis Pena. As for your paddleboarding across
Cape Cod Bay I am assuming you made the trip with others (100+ others)
with boats following along ending up @ Mayo Beach, Wellfleet.

Have someone take you by boat to Culebrita!

Thanks Tim. Yes, taking into consideration everyone's abilities is critical for any water endeavors and as always respecting Mother Nature is tops.

Donna, you are most correct on the the CC Bay Crossing. There were other folks with me (30+ the year I did it) and yes the safety of coast guard boats unfortunately blowing fumes down our gullet. Was not trying to paint a picture other than my physical experience with paddle boarding.

However, the 50+ 30+mile paddle trips I've done previous and since have not included either other people or safety boats. Many of these trips becoming hairy and compromised at times. The crossing is a charity event. The real struggles and adventures occur during training and personal goal setting. To call paddling over to Culebrita "dumb" may be a bit short sighted and critical in my opinion.

None the less thank you for endorsing my choice of dive operators as my wife and I are pumped to explore the underworld together.

Matthew,

You are welcome. I think Donna is try to warn people against trying a crossing to Culebrita that time of year when you are likely to see 3-4 foot steep-short-waves with white caps on many days. Winds are fairly persistent then. You'll start from shore and everything will look good until you approach midchannel. At your furthest distance from shore things can be the worst. And trouble always seems to come in an instant, catching most off guard. Now, factor in isolated, small storm cells that blow in, literally in 10-15 minutes, which is not enough time to get to safer waters, and suddenly you're dealing with a different ugly beast. If you have satellite TV and internet where you are staying, watch the surf forecast, wind direction, and even the tides (only about 1 foot in Culebra). Crossing to Luis Pena is generally a much safer bet that time of year than Culebrita. You can try paddle boarding there, but have some kayakers in your group with tandems and enough empty seats to cover paddleboarders. You can switch modes of transportation on the way back. Kayakers can take food and water to make you time on Luis Pena more enjoyable. Take some towline for pulling boards if conditions are a bit to rough. If it's just getting some distance on the board, cruise Ensenada Honda. Better conditions for paddle boarding, plenty of shoreline, good mileage potential, and opportunity to push your limits in places near Dakity, Malena, Pela and Bahia Mosquito.

I have kayaked to both Culebrita and Louis Penia. Mostly in the Spring and summer when the winds are down. This coming Monday the winds are forecasted for 4 knts all day so that may be a good time. I do not kayak out there on the weekends due to all of the large boat traffic. It's a mile to either island but as noted, a whole lot can go wrong quickly. When you get into the channel heading to LP the large swells come through from the North. Just be aware of your capablities. Be safe and have fun!

Tim and Geronimo. I hear that. Rope and PFD are always on me. I will most definitely heed local advice about how to navigate the waters during our visit. Many thanks.

If it's real windy I put in at Malones on the West side and kayak around that shoreline up to Rosarrio. You are protected from the Northeast winds. You can see the chop and wind drop down over the island about a 100 yards out but you would be in the lee.
