should we rent a car or fly?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Does anyone have advice on this? I'm trying to decide whether to rent a car in SJ and get the ferry. How long is the trip to the ferry (is it at Fajardo)? Would it just be easier to fly to Culebra? Will I absolutely need a car on Culebra or can we get by without one? How long is the ferry ride? Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are at Flamenco Beach, you will probably want a car although you can easily get back and forth to town via publico (bus) during the daytime. It costs $2.00 per person each way. It's a couple of miles into town.

The ferry ride is about 1 1/2 hours from Fajardo (Maybe longer on the cargo ferry depending on if the new dock is built. ) It's beautiful ride if you're good with boats - if not - well...

I'd say the easiest way to get to Culebra (especially if you are arriving from somewhere into San Juan) is to fly Isla Nena Airways direct from the Isla Verde (the International Airport.) Another option is to fly on Vieques AirLink fro Isla Grande.

You can rent a car in Culebra.

Best of luck.

Driving from the airport in San Juan to the ferry in Fajardo can be 45 minutes or 90 minutes, depending on time of day and the day of the week.

It is easier to fly ... though more expensive and in my mind the ferry ride is part of the Culebra experience. The ferry ride is between 75 and 90 minutes.

I heartily recommend a car while on Culebra. You'll have much more flexibility to see more of the island. The only exception might be if you are going to stay at Flamenco and go to that one beach every day.

Have a great visit ... and remember if you love it not to tell any one!

When we visited Culebra our thought was to stay in town where everything is located so we could walk in case we spent a little too much time at the bars. We also rented a car from Jerry's jeeps so we could go to all the beautiful beaches on the island.

I've been wondering about the ferry, too. We hope to get the 9:30am ferry on a Thursday morning. Will we need reservations? I've tried many times to call the ferry number listed under transport, and no one has ever answered.

And, what are the chances it will actually run? Is it fairly dependable?

Thanks!

I would add a couple things to the others that have posted: if you drive from SJ make it a 1 day rental (very hard to get a spot for your car on cargo ferry) . AVIS allows you to return the car to the primary resort in Fajardo (the name escapes me) and then you can rent a jeep once in Culebra. Passenger ferry is pretty dependable. If you are taking a cooler with you they chrage an extra buck or so for that. Get to the dock at least 30 minutews ahead of depart time to get your ticket.

Thanks for the ferry info! This site is so helpful for those of us who have never visited Culebra.
