Bike vs Jeep
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are an athletic, adventuresome couple. The idea of renting bikes versus a jeep is really appealing but is it realistic if we want to do a lot of exploring of the island?

IMHO a bike is fine. However, it does mean more time in transit, e.g., more time to get to and from Flamenco and less time on the beach. On the plus side, you might not be able to get down to Soldado in a jeep but you would be able to on a bike. On-the-other-hand, carrying snorkeling gear on a bike can be a nuisance. If you do bike, make sure it has good brakes and a granny gear. :-)

We've rented bikes from Dick and Cathie. They rent Specialized bikes, great for the hills and back roads. It does take a little more time than driving, and the roads are narrow and sometimes steep, but there are some pluses also. Not having to search for a parking spot in town, for example, and being able to get into Soldado, and not being tied to the publico schedule. Bring a daypack for carrying lunches, water, etc., and a headlamp or two in case you miscalculate and find yourself out after dark. Dick keeps a supply of old inner tubes to tie your gear onto your bike. Plan your shopping trips so you don't have to carry too much at a time, and carry plenty of water, and you will be fine. Dick meets his customers at the ferry dock, gives you a tour of town, and takes you to your lodgings. In our case he also came and picked up the bikes, and gave us a ride to the ferry dock in order to catch the 6:30 a.m. ferry.

Hi Arroz,
Thanks for your perspective on this. We are planning to go with bikes - for the exercise and simplicity of it.

Thanks so much for the details and suggestions, Linda. We now have a better idea of what to expect and we are game for it!

Depending on the time of year, you may want to toss a cheap dollar-store plastic poncho in your daypack in case it rains. When we have been there in late March-early April the most rain we have encountered is a few brief (10-15 minute) showers, which were no problem for biking. I understand there can be a lot more rain at other times of the year, though, and you'll have no protection on a bike.

Enjoy!!

i always opt for a golf cart over a jeep on culebra

helps in the evening when you just dont feel like biking anymore!!! plus when you wanna lug a cooler to flamenco is just a nice touch.

plus its got a cup holder for your adult beverages ;o)
