Bioluminescence in Culebra

How is the bioluminescence right here on Culebra? And where may we find it?
We have some guests coming to visit us and the bioluminescent critters. A boat operator said that we could skip the trip to Vieques altogether. A kayak at night would be preferable to motorboat trip. Any logiostic info about kayak, swimming, etc. would be welcome also. Thanks very much!

Make sure you check the moon calendar http://www.isla-vieques.com/moon-calendar.php before promising anything. Once reassured, that you will have a dark night, the most accessible bay woul dbe Dakity, but Manglar is the best. I would recommend this trip only for experienced kayakers, if you start from town!!

Enjoy Culebra!

A night kayak trip sounds dangerous in the Ocean! No short rowing trip to Dakity or Manglar. That is long in the daytime. And check sea and wind conditions. May not be worth the potential for a bad outcome.

Wow, I didn't know there were bioluminescence areas in Culebra. Yes, judging from the map, Dakity and Manglar are far away. I would say you would have to be a very experienced kayaker to go to these areas at night. I wonder if you can bring the kayaks closer to the areas and go in right off shore the way they do at Tamarindo. Weather and sea conditions could make it more of a Navy SEAL operation.

Negative that on the close insertion point at either. Would need a helo drop.

A night kayak trip is not for the inexperienced. I'll second Geronimo on watching the wind and seas and Micheal for watching the moon phases. Also very important is watching the tides. Anybody who spends time in and around the ocean knows you should always know your tides. Though not big in Culebra, a foot at most, it will make the difference between paddling over submerged reef, or grounding yourself. There are low, low tides and the wind can make them lower. In the dark, you will have no idea of where to go. If you are familiar with hand-held GPS, map everything considered hazards during the day, then maybe try it at night. If you get a low tide during the day, map hazards then. You can also mark your exit point for and easy return. Don't just go out at night for a paddle in unfamiliar water. That would be a mistake.

If you do take measures to plan a safe excursion, and do take these measures, it is fun to swim in the glowing swarms with a snorkel and mask.
