staying in town vs the beaches

Author: thething (---.cst.lightpath.net) Date:   08-08-12 16:00 Dear all, I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times, but can't seem to find relevant posts. I plan on coming to Culebra with 2 young kids and can't decide on the location - is it more practical to stay closer to beaches or in town? I am hoping to find a quiet place with beautiful views. Additionally, is Zoni area as nice as that of Flamenco beach? Any specific recomendations will be very much appreciated.

Author: Doug (---.dsl.stlsmo.swbell.net) Date:   08-08-12 16:29 The villa rentals out at Zoni and Punta Viento tend to be the places with the views and the higher rates. There are only a few "beachfront" lodgings on Culebra, and this is a big part of why its beaches are so pristine. I alternate between solitude/views and the guesthouses in town. If you enjoy dining/drinking out, the convenience of walking to most places, town works great. The rates are lower, too, and the money saved pays for a Jerry's Jeep rental, a necessity for taking in all the best beaches on Culebra.

Check the location of the various rental properties -- if you are up on a hill you will have better views and breezes to help keep away the mosquitoes. For example, Casa Culebra is quiet and close to town (walking distance to Susie's for adults and teenagers) but has a nice view of Ensenada Honda and town from the large deck. Unfortunately the wart that is Costa Bonita kinda messes up the view in one direction, but I spent a lot of time just sitting on the deck with a cold drink watching boats coming and going.

Author: JeffandMary (192.42.83.---) Date:   08-09-12 11:33 We stayed at Tamarindo Estates. Clean, quiet, very private, yet conveniently located between Flemenco beach and town. We loved it. And a jeep from Jerry's will be needed if you want to get to the more secluded places like Zoni which is every bit as nice as Flemenco but it has no amenities. You must bring everything you need and take it back with you. Don’t forget beach chairs and water. And take a trip to Culebrita with Captain Sebastian to see the turtles at Tortuga beach and the lighthouse.

Author: JeffandMary (192.42.83.---) Date:   08-09-12 11:36 Oh I forgot to mention the view from Tamarindo which is spectacular and the sunsets too! We just sat right on the deck outside our cabin for beautiful sunsets. And they have a very nice pool.

It didn't occur to me that it's possible to stay close to town and still have nice views. :) Additoinal suggestions regarding specific places to stay are very much appreciated!

Author: richard (---.static.stls.mo.charter.com) Date:   08-13-12 13:58 harbor view has gotten mixed marks in the past, but I never had a problem there. it does have good views, although the nearest beach - Melones - is very rocky and full of sea urchins.
