lodging choice for snorkelers

We are trying to find where there is reasonably priced lodging in Culebra that is within easy walking distance to excellent snorkeling. We prefer not to stay in town. Would you please advise?

Flamenco....a little work up front, but considerably better, IMO, than any of the other options. Not bad walking either.

Herb,

Thank-you for your quick reply. When you stated that Flamenco was "a little work upfront," what did you mean? Also, were you saying that you preferred the accommodations on Flamenco versus the accommodations elsewhere with nearby snorkeling, or did you mean that you preferred the snorkeling at Flamenco to that at other beaches or areas in Culebra? Whichever you meant, why did you prefer one over the other?

You might also consider Melones Beach House (East or West). In terms of Culebra prices, I consider it "reasonably priced" and is an easy walk to Melones Beach and the reserve. The snorkeling may not be considered as good as Carlos Rosario but we prefer it and it is easier to get to. It is only a 10 minute walk from town.

Good morning,
As Culebra is only 3 x 7 you are never too far from the snorkeling.

The Flamenco side isn't the best side of the island for snorkeling as the reef mostly runs along the southern side.

I swim most days & have taken guests with us & stopped my swim w/heads up to point out where the turtles were :)

We stayed at Tamarindo Estates, which is on the west side of the island, very nice, quiet, and private. I would call it averaged priced and the snorkeling beach is a short walk down the hill and the sea turtles are in the sea grass. A little north of there is Carlos Rosario and an area called The Wall for great snorkeling. However, I would say that there are lots of great snorkeling spots so no matter what, you can't go wrong wherever you stay. If you want really cheap you can't beat camping. You’ll be out of town, actually on Flemenco beach, and a short walk from Carlos Rosario. I would check with Terri for more info on the south side of the island.

Hmm, Melones beach is just south of Tamarindo, I'll have to check that out next time.

Hi MaryAnn, I will explain my answer further. My wife and I prefer camping at Flamenco beach. It is within walking distance of great snorkeling, Tamarindo, Carlos Rosario. (Tamarindo has the advantage of being accessable by publico, but generally you have to walk back.) Terri is absolutely right, not much snorkeling at Flamenco and I hope I did not mislead you.

Melones is only a publico ride away from Flamenco, go into town, snorkel and then get dinner and ride the publico back to Flamenco to your tent.

Yep, it is a little more work up front, you have to schlep a tent and stuff, but its not too complicated. The cost factor is awesome and you know exactly the condition and cleanliness or your accomodations. Additionally, you are on the beach for more time, have all of you stuff with you so you don't have to go back to your rental, and as your initial question asks, you are not in town.

There is plenty of food at the kiosks, very basic, but will keep you reasonable happy. Go into town for a few nicer eats and you will truly enjoy your stay.

One note, our last trip in January, was awesome. Keep in mind that even then it was pretty warm, so be prepared and stay hydrated and don't ever forget the sunscreen.
