golf carts vs thing
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello. We tried renting a jeep but none were available for our week. We reserved a golf cart but are having second thoughts. What will be our limitations with a golf cart? Can they make it up and down the dirt roads? We realize we cannot leave anything in them since no way of locking up. How would a golf car compare with a Volkswagen Thing for ability to travel on rougher roads? Does the thing have windows that roll up and can it be locked?

We get the thing every visit to culebra. You have to decide if it is for you. It is from 1972ish. No power steering or brakes. No windows and doesnt lock. It goes anywhere and runs great. Dick is a pleasure to do business with. If you cant drive real tractors ie. not mowers or operate machinery its not for you. Enjoy culebra and good luck

During a very rainy week we spent on Culebra in 2010, I felt very sorry for the people I saw on golfcarts. They had rainflaps, but the passengers were still soaked to the bone. With the Thing you must be able to drive a stick shift.

The golf cart can go anywhere on the paved road. The one issue is if it rains. So bring a trash bag in case you need to fut your stuff in it. And they are fun.

I think my wife and I may opt for a golf cart next time around... speed isn't an issue, the carts aren't any less secure than the things or the cheap jeeps, and they can all go to the same places. I guess it might be questionable as to whether you could get a golf car to Tamarindo though...? As far as rain... we got wet in our jeep, and you're usually heading to or from the beach so a lil rain doesn't hurt! :)

You can barely get a Hummer to Soldado. LOL

We have gotten there without a hummer. Very slowly and checking puddles for depth. It helped a guy who lived back in there was cutting acacia branches just ahead of us to clear the way. Amazing beach and snorkeling if you can get back there.

We have been to Soldado on a bicycle but getting back up the hill was another story.

We had The Thing not too long ago and took it to the road to the path to Brava, Tamarindo, Soldado and Zoni. I was happy NOT to have the golf cart to get to Zoni because I don't think it can go too fast and it probably would take too long to get there. The hills are REALLY steep and was happy to be in the Thing. You can not lock anything in it and we got rained on a few times as there are no windows but we had our bathing suits and when the sun came back out we'd take the top off and get dry. You must be able to drive a rugged stick and keep it in first going up the steep hills!
