accomodations
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi !

2 friends and I are visiting Culebra at the end of the month (we're so excited!). I am having some difficulties finding a cool place to stay. We're young (20-something) and looking for comfortable but budget places to stay. I've looked into Hotel Kokomo and Mamacita's Guesthouse (because they both have websites). Can any one suggest some nice places in or near Dewey that can accomodate 3 young people w/o costing too much (under 90-100)??

Thanks! Can't wait to be on the island!

Grace

try Villa Boheme. They have nice rooms that are in your range. Cheaper rooms do not have a kitchen but all guests have access to the "shared" kitchen and grill. They are right next to Dinghy Dock (you must do happy hour 4-6PM) and Dewey is a short walk over the bridge.

By the way, Villa Boheme does have a web page to check-out at www.villaboheme.com.

We stayed at Harbour View Villas and liked it and are probably about your age (22, 23, 23, and 24). Feel free to drop me a line for some friendly advice!

Dear Grace,

I've stayed at the Villa Boheme about 2 years ago and really enjoyed the stay. The owners are very friendly and will accomodate to your needs. Also, you have to try the night life. The best advice for night life is to ask a friendly bartender or waitress. The night life is crazy because the crowds travel through about 5 differents places by the end of the night. It's wild! P:S: Enjoy!

I stayed at Culebra Beach Villa's, on Flamenco beach, for 1 week approximately 3 weeks ago. My boyfriend and I had the most incredible trip together there. The Culebra Beach villa's provided the week in paradise we desperately needed. Each cabin has it's own hammock and table with chairs on it's porch. We were woken every morning by roosters crowing and a few sweet cats kept us company (on the deck) all week. The room was very simple, but it was all we needed. We barely saw 5 people the first 2 days we were there. The beach was basically all ours... The only drawback was the lack of autonomy in getting places. We will definitely rent a car next time. Waiting for "taxis" to come was torturous at times. Wiso, a taxi driver, was fabulous and we really missed him when he went to the main island for a couple of days. I can't wait to go back!!

Hi Matt,

My husband and I are staying at Harbor View Villas this summer and wanted to get a little bit of feedback about accomodations, location, transportation and food. What do you recommend and what is your overall impression about Harbor View?
Thanks,
Ana

Ana

I’ve stayed in the suites at Harbor View twice now and enjoyed it both times. Given the general open-air nature of the living spaces, it helps to consider them as cabin camping (remember that geckos are harmless). The views are great. The guests I’ve encountered are friendly and easy-going. Penelope and BC (friendly, curious dogs – the Doberman thinks she’s a Lab) will drop in on occasion and stay until you stop petting them. Harbor Suite has the best kitchen, Sunset, the best deck. The villas look nice and if I go back to Culebra (if? who am I kidding?) I might spring the extra for one.

Elsewhere in this forum I’ve read some negative comments, but my experiences have been good. The only real drawback at the moment is the construction - if the ferry has just come in, getting through the intersection at the bottom of the hill can be a headache. Right now, when it’s busy, driving is a lot like one of those picture puzzles where you move one tile over to move another down. But given the view, you can just check before heading down the hill. And actually they're doing a pretty good job coordinating street closures and directing trafffic during the day.

It’s really not a bad walk (a little steep) from town and the Publicos, but you’d prob. want a jeep anyway to get to beaches like Zoni.

The Colmado near the gas station had the better looking meat, but the larger one in town has better overall selection.
