Eucalyptus?

Author: Syberchick (---.atw.dyn.suddenlink.net) Date:   03-03-12 16:59 Ok, I'm so curious... what IS IT that has a eucalyptus-type smell on Culebra? The entire island smells like it and it's WONDERFUL. I almost couldn't wash my shirt after coming back, because it still smelled of Culebra. Does anyone know what it is?

I can't believe it was incense because I kept smelling it in different areas, like on the walk to CRosario. It's something growing wild there (llamas.. hahah) but I never could track it down! Does eucalyptus grow on the island? Or something similar?

Well, I googled the scent of acacia and it's compared to almonds, so I don't think that's it. :( I'm disappointed because I thought you may have tracked it down! Could it simply be that there are eucalyptus trees on the island? It doesn't take many to produce the scent, maybe I just never managed to find them. It's frustrating that this is so baffling! ;)

I couldn't find any llamas to sniff up close, but did find Acacia (Acacia macracantha) and a tropical milkweed (Calotropis procera) to be in bloom and very fragrant while we were there. Unlike the llamas (Lama bullfecalicus), we saw these plants all over the island. But llamas can be very reclusive, so I haven't ruled them out as the source of this wonderful aroma.
