Surfing trips from Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am heading to Culebra for the first time in December. My family's favorite place to vacation has been St. John, but we could not get flights in to St. Thomas. We found Culebra somehow and planned a vacation. I am looking to go surfing for a day in Puerto Rico, but am not sure of the best way to go about this. Also, is there any nightlife on the island? We were told the only thing to do after 9pm is turtle watching.

I don't know what time of year you plan on visiting Puerto Rico but the best surfing on the island is on the West Coast of the island. The towns of Isabela and Rincon have amazing surf but only in the Winter months. In fact the world surfing championships were held in Ricncon about 25 years ago.

it's funny how a lot of people don't know much about this island...

I'm heading to Culebra at the end of December. I want to take a day trip, but heard that traveling all the way to the western coast of Puerto Rico could take about 3 hours. Is this not true? What is the best way to get there?

you could fly to mayaguez then take a 20 minute drive to the beaches by rental car

I feel you Gary, I dealt with crowds in San Diego for quite a while. I'll guess I'll try to figure it out when I get to Culebra. Hopefully someone will come to the rescue when I'm standing in the middle of the island with my board and a clueless look on my face.

There are two surfing beaches on the north shore of Culebra: Bahia Marejada and Bahia Oleaje between Flamenco Beach and Sonny Beach. If you are luky enogh to be during a Northern swell you'll see. Be sure to get to Culebrita for a day in the sun, beer etc.

Mamacitas and the Batey are good at night.

It's a good idea to check with Fish and Wildlife before booking a surfing trip to Culebra. The good surfing areas are off limits during turtle nesting season (I forget the dates), but are fine other times of the year. Give F&W a call.

Wow hope you enjoy the bounty of Culebra, it was no accident that you found Culebra. Very hospitable, beautiful, and satisfying. Winter is the time to go. I liked the gentle 15k-18k for windsurfing. The occasional storm cloud of 25k+/- was a fun twist. It's true not a whole lot happening at night, give this fine piece of Puerto Rico a try you'll be happy ,Zonni Beach sure gets my vote! peace

My friend has a house at Culebra. This spring break 2004 I went with my friends to Playa Brava and Resaca. It was a sunny, low wind and 4 to 6 waves. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! After 3 hours of surfing we were so happy and pump up for the next day!!!!

make sure to bring beers, because after surfing you will want to go to Culebrita tooooooooooooo relaxxxxxx!!!!!

there is no surfing spots in Culebra island, maybe the best place to catch waves is at Zoni beach , I saw some waves beacuse we were having a storm for 2 days and in flamingo beach too , but it will take u like 45 mns to get to the ride spot and is not worth it if u have an accident ,because u so far away fromthe shore , I was there in Jan , I was camping for the weekend at flamingo , I loved the stay in that beautiful and empty island , it gives you the sense that you own everything you eyes see, at nite , you can see stars never seen before , the milky way just pop out in sight just looking up and north and the ever blowing winds coming from the east,
there is no nightlife in Culebra ,a couples of bars and they closed by 1 am.
if u like to go to the beach and just relax and do nothing , Culeabra is the spot , the best surf spot is the town of Rincon , west of Puerto Rico , ask for the Light house or nuclear dome on rt 413 (the road to happinness).

Bro, I'll tell you...CUlebra is perfect to go and relax...and snorkling...
Surfing spots are located in "ISLA GRANDE"...the plane ride to Fajardo is about 12 minutes and about 30.00 in the ferry...about 1 hour and $3.00 if u get it on time both ways...

Surfing spots?
A. Let's start from East to West
B. Luquillo - La Pared (used to go there a looooong time ago and it was good)
C. PiƱones - Chatarra (better get ready for big and reef, no sand bar like Cali)
D. Isla Verde - Pinegrove (gremmy but it gets good sometimes)
E. Condado:
1. La Punta (perfect when it is glazed)
2. La 8 (when this is good it is big, just a lot to paddle)
3. La Perla (you HAVE to be a local to get it, a good ride but there might be some sharky's...no Big White's like Cali tho)
F. Manati - Los Tubos (Used to be good, dunno now)
G. Isabela - Jobos (sounds HObos...when good great)
H. Aguadilla - Gas Chamber (reef and HUGE)
I. Rincon - Dome (HUGE in winter time)

ANother spot that get's really huge is Tres Palmas, this is in Humacao...SouthEast....

Also, not that you are going to find a lot...A LOT of people in Morey Boggie's and as every spot you need need to be careful with the locals...set your ground but don't try to claim you zone and you will be kewl...repect is just the best advice have fun.

I have a couple of pictures of one of my team riders, it will be posted on our website as soon it get's released http://www.dacure.com check it often.
